With his debut opera, the 21-year-old Shostakovich scathingly criticizes post-Tsarist Russia, which has been shaken by world war, bloody civil war and increasing state terror. The image of a brutal society full of physically and mentally disfigured dodgers and violent criminals is musically captured in a grotesque alternation of different styles: circus music and Russian-Orthodox church music, gallop, polka, marches and fugues are cut against each other in cinematic drasticness. Fear and violence lurk behind the biting joke.

Vladimir Jurowski, the new General Music Director of the Bavarian State Opera, and Kirill Serebrennikov, Russian theatre, opera, ballet, film and television director, are working together for the first time on the new production of  The Nose  . Kiril Serebrennikov is responsible for the direction as well as the stage, video and costumes and is supported by several close employees: inside. Kirill Serebrennikov was born in Rostov-on-Don and graduated in Physics here in 1992. During his studies he taught himself to work as a theatre, opera, film and television director and costume designer. Salome  at the Stuttgart Opera and  Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Komische Oper Berlin were the first highly acclaimed works that Serebrennikov was able to present to an audience outside of Russia. In March 2020 he made his debut with his first play in Germany, where he staged his adaptation of Giovanni Boccaccio's  Decamerone at the Deutsches Theater Berlin  . In 2021 his new production of  Parsifal  premiered at the Vienna State Opera. Serebrennikov received an award for his film work at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. Other films were shown at the film festivals in Rome, Locarno and Venice and were nominated for the Golden Lion and for the Grand Prix of Kinotavr in Sochi. Serebrennikov has been Artistic Director of the Gogol Center in Moscow since 2012.

Der 21-jährige Schostakowitsch übt mit seinem Opernerstling eine ätzende Kritik am post-zaristischen, von Weltkrieg, blutigstem Bürgerkrieg und zunehmendem Staatsterror gebeutelten Russland. Das Bild einer brutalen Gesellschaft voller körperlich und seelisch entstellter Duckmäuser und Gewalttäter wird musikalisch eingefangen im grotesken Wechsel verschiedenster Stilebenen: Zirkusmusik und russisch-orthodoxe Kirchenmusik, Galopp, Polka, Märsche und Fugen werden in filmischer Drastik gegeneinander geschnitten. Hinter dem beißenden Witz lauern Angst und Gewalt.

Vladimir Jurowski, der neue Generalmusikdirektor der Bayerischen Staatsoper, und Kirill Serebrennikov, russischer Theater-, Opern-, Ballett-, Film- und Fernsehregisseur, arbeiten im Rahmen der Neuinszenierung von Die Nase erstmals zusammen. Kiril Serebrennikov zeichnet sowohl für die Regie, als auch die Bühne, Video und Kostüme verantwortlich und wird hierbei unterstützt von mehreren engen Mitarbeiter:innen. Kirill Serebrennikov wurde in Rostov-on-Don geboren und schloss hier 1992 sein Physikstudium ab.
