Ныне редко исполняемые «Гугеноты» (1836) – это пышный музыкально-театральный блокбастер, базовый образец так называемой большой оперы, которая царила на французской сцене почти столетие. Иные критики превозносили «Гугенотов» до небес, другие нещадно бранили, у публики же успех сочинения был стабильным и длительным: до начала ХХ века оно не сходило с афиш по всему миру, выдержав в одной только Гранд-опера свыше тысячи представлений. Авторы бестселлера – композитор Джакомо Мейербер и либреттист Эжен Скриб – вложили в свое творение всё, что могло бы обеспечить ему популярность, и очень постарались, чтобы зритель не заскучал. На неспокойном, а в финале – кровавом, историческом фоне (Религиозные войны XVI века, Варфоломеевская ночь) разворачивается трагическая история любви протестанта Рауля и католички Валентины. Опера полна резких контрастов: на сцене то танцы, то баталии, то дворец, то кладбище, то свадьба, то резня. Сладкозвучное итальянское бельканто искусно сочетается с благородной французской декламационностью, вокальные монологи переходят в развернутые ансамбли и грандиозные массовые сцены. По части хорового письма Мейербер особенно силен; как никто, он способен создать на сцене иллюзию живой толпы. Хоры Мейербера настолько легко ложатся на слух, настолько ярки и мелодичны, что прямо-таки искушают зал подпевать; один из секретов обожания «Гугенотов» заключается именно в эффекте участия зрителей в водовороте сценических событий. Ни Вагнер, ни Верди, ни Мусоргский не обошли стороной мейерберовские находки в области хоровой музыки. Роскошен и оркестр Мейербера, композитор умел мастерски смешивать краски, не боясь использовать дерзкие комбинации инструментов и диковинные тембры (старинная виоль д’амур в романсе Рауля). Объемная, сочная мейерберовская медь по своей красоте и мощи не отстает от вагнеровской.

Горячим поклонником «Гугенотов» был Петр Ильич Чайковский, который посещал спектакли в Париже. Свои впечатления он выразил так: «“Гугеноты” – одна из прекраснейших опер во всем лирическом репертуаре, и не только музыканту по профессии, но и всякому сколько-нибудь образованному дилетанту дорога эта превосходная музыка, с ее удивительнейшей, первенствующей между всеми произведениями подобного рода, любовной сценой IV акта, с ее превосходными хорами, с ее полной новизны и оригинальных приемов инструментовкой, с ее порывисто-страстными мелодиями, с ее искусной музыкальной характеристикой Марселя, Валентины, религиозного фанатизма католиков и пассивного мужества гугенотов». The now rarely performed Les Huguenots (1836) is a lavish musical-theatrical blockbuster, a basic example of the so-called grand opera that reigned on the French stage for almost a century. Some critics praised “The Huguenots” to the skies, others scolded them mercilessly, but the success of the work among the public was stable and long-lasting: until the beginning of the twentieth century, it did not leave the posters all over the world, having lasted over a thousand performances at the Grand Opera alone. The authors of the bestseller - composer Giacomo Meyerbeer and librettist Eugene Scribe - put everything into their creation that could ensure its popularity, and tried very hard so that the viewer did not get bored. Against a turbulent, and in the finale - bloody, historical background (Religious Wars of the 16th century, St. Bartholomew's Night), the tragic love story of the Protestant Raoul and the Catholic Valentina unfolds. The opera is full of sharp contrasts: on stage there are dances, then battles, now a palace, now a cemetery, now a wedding, now a massacre. The mellifluous Italian bel canto is skillfully combined with noble French declamation, vocal monologues turn into extended ensembles and grandiose crowd scenes. In terms of choral writing, Meyerbeer is especially strong; like no one else, he is able to create the illusion of a live crowd on stage. Meyerbeer's choruses are so easy on the ear, so bright and melodic that they actually tempt the audience to sing along; One of the secrets of the adoration of “The Huguenots” lies precisely in the effect of the audience’s participation in the whirlpool of stage events. Neither Wagner, nor Verdi, nor Mussorgsky were spared Meyerbeer's discoveries in the field of choral music. Meyerbeer's orchestra was also luxurious; the composer knew how to skillfully mix colors, not being afraid to use daring combinations of instruments and outlandish timbres (the ancient viol d'amore in Raoul's romance). Volumetric, juicy Meyerbeer copper does not lag behind Wagner's in its beauty and power.

An ardent fan of “The Huguenots” was Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, who attended performances in Paris. He expressed his impressions as follows: ““The Huguenots” is one of the most beautiful operas in the entire lyrical repertoire, and not only to a musician by profession, but also to any even educated amateur, this excellent music is dear, with its most amazing, superior among all works of this kind , the love scene of Act IV, with its excellent choruses, with its instrumentation full of novelty and original techniques, with its impetuous and passionate melodies, with its skillful musical characterization of Marseille, Valentine, the religious fanaticism of the Catholics and the passive courage of the Huguenots.” Agreeing with the authoritative opinion of his compatriot, the Mariinsky Theater enriches its repertoire with this magnificent work.
