In Lutheran Protestant liturgical tradition,
the story of Christ’s Passion was sung during the celebrations of Holy Week, a moment of spiritual communion. Germany’s greatest Baroque composers wrote Passions, which evolved into a veritable oratorio featuring complex dramatisation. Starting with three protagonists – namely Christ, the Evangelist and the crowd – the Passions are enriched by new characters, with numerous arias, expressive recitatives, commentaries and chorales sung with the faithful.

Johann Sebastian Bach probably composed a Passion based on the texts of each of the four Evangelists, but only two admirable ones have survived: The Passion According to St. Matthew Passion and the Passion According to St. John. The latter has a simplicity that goes straight to the heart, brimming with gentleness and piety. Bach was Cantor in Leipzig in 1724 and chose a libretto by the poet Barthold Heinrich Brockes for his celestial music with its intimate, meditative atmosphere. He gave the choir an essential role: that of the hateful crowd surrounding Christ at the crucifixion, but also, in a grandiose finale full of hope, that of the Christians imbued with a deep faith.

Raphaël Pichon and his Baroque ensemble Pygmalion, one of the finest in its field, are teaming up with a prestigious cast for their first performance in Switzerland, to round off the Easter weekend and their tour of Europe’s leading concert halls.

Dans la tradition liturgique protestante luthérienne,
on chantait le récit de la Passion du Christ au cours des célébrations de la Semaine Sainte, un moment de communion spirituelle. Les plus grands compositeurs baroques d’Allemagne ont composé des Passions, qui ont évolué en un véritable oratorio à la dramatisation complexifiée. Partant de trois protagonistes à l’origine, le Christ, l’Évangéliste et la foule, elles s’enrichissent de nouveaux personnages, avec de nombreux airs, des récitatifs expressifs, des commentaires et des chorals chantés avec les fidèles.

Jean-Sébastien Bach compose vraisemblablement une Passion sur les textes de chacun des quatre évangélistes, mais seules deux nous sont parvenues, admirables : La Passion selon Saint Matthieu et La Passion selon Saint Jean. Cette dernière est d’une simplicité qui va droit au cœur, pleine de douceur et de piété. Bach est alors Cantor à Leipzig, en 1724, et choisit un livret du poète Barthold Heinrich Brockes, pour sa musique céleste à l’atmosphère intime et méditative. Il donne au chœur une place essentielle : celle de la foule haineuse autour du Supplicié mais aussi, dans un final grandiose et porteur d’espoir, celle des Chrétiens habités par une foi profonde.

Pour leur première fois en Suisse, en clôture du week-end pascal et de leur tournée dans les plus grandes salles européennes, Raphaël Pichon et son ensemble Pygmalion, une des meilleures formations baroques actuelles, s’associent à une prestigieuse distribution.
