Pygmalion tient une place toute particulière dans l’histoire de la musique : c’est en effet le premier acte de ballet qui s’invite à l’Opéra le 27 août 1748, ouvrant ainsi la voie à l’émancipation d’un nouveau genre spécifiquement français. Un tel spectacle avait la faveur du public du milieu du XVIIIe siècle : le genre plaisait et les pièces à succès combinées les unes aux autres pouvaient former un nouveau programme de type composite. La forme est courte, mêlant chant et danse autour d’une trame narrative très épurée.
L’intrigue ressuscite le mythe de Pygmalion, alors très peu mis en musique. Le sculpteur tombe amoureux  de sa statue, qui s’anime en dansant.
Le baron Grimm ne tarit pas d’éloges : « Quelle régularité dans le dessein, quelle harmonie dans la symphonie, quelle simplicité, quel savoir dans la basse continue, quelle noblesse dans sa marche, quelle expression dans le chant, comme il est touchant et vrai ! » (Lettre sur Omphale).

« Ces deux oeuvres de Royer et Rameau, grands compositeurs français sous le règne de Louis XV, sont les points culminants du genre de l’acte de ballet. La danse est, traditionnellement en musique, le moment privilégié où les compositeurs expriment de manière saisissante leur génie de l’harmonie et de l’orchestration. C’est ce qu’ont fait ces deux maîtres, de manière remarquable mais très différentes. Nous sommes dans les deux cas en France en 1748 mais chacune des oeuvres témoigne d’une identité extrêmement forte, petite fantaisie orientaliste avec Almasis et métamorphose d’Ovide avec Pygmalion, nous sommes pris dans cette magie incroyable de voir une statue s’animer au son d’une musique totalement enchanteresse. »
