Tak pisał o francuskich wydaniach pieśni Stanisława Moniuszki Wojciech Sowiński, historyk i krytyk: „Jest to istotnie ważny przypadek w historii wydawnictwa paryskiego, gdyż od czasu, jak tu bawię [od 1828 roku] nigdy nic podobnego się nie zdarzyło. […] Tłumaczenie francuskie, chociaż nie we wszystkich śpiewach dobre, jednak nieźle się udało, a jest to ważną rzeczą dla amatorów i śpiewaków francuskich, którzy nie znają dobrze rytmiczności naszej muzyki. […] Żal dziewczyny prześlicznie sie udał. […] Les larmes […] dosyć gładko tłumaczone. Le chant de la tour czyni chwałę kompozytorowi, tłumaczenie mniej dobre”.

Henri Duparc niezwykle trafnie dobierał środki wyrazu dla oddania tekstu poetyckiego, nadając pieśniom charakter osobistej wypowiedzi. Dzięki oryginalnej, bogatej harmonice i subtelności kolorystycznej wykraczają one poza granice romantyzmu, zapowiadając miejscami muzyczny impresjonizm.

Rok 1840 był zarówno w życiu, jak i w twórczości Roberta Schumanna czasem wyjątkowym. Oczekiwał wówczas niecierpliwie rozstrzygnięcia procesu z ojcem swej narzeczonej, Friedrichem Wieckiem, by móc zawrzeć upragnione małżeństwo z Klarą. Od stycznia tamtego do stycznia następnego roku powstało blisko 140 pieśni. Ten „rok pieśni” przyniósł wiele znanych arcydzieł. Wszystkie one odnosiły się – czy to w otwarty, czy ukryty sposób – do Klary.

Henri Duparc very accurately selected the means of expression to convey the poetic text, giving the songs the character of a personal statement. Thanks to the original, rich harmonies and color subtlety, they go beyond the limits of Romanticism, in some places heralding musical impressionism.

The year 1840 was an exceptional time both in the life and in the work of Robert Schumann. At that time, he impatiently awaited the outcome of the lawsuit with his fiancée's father, Friedrich Wieck, in order to be able to conclude his longed-for marriage with Klara. From January that year to January of the following year, nearly 140 songs were written. This "year of song" has produced many well-known masterpieces. They all referred to Klara, whether openly or implicitly.
