GIUSEPPE VERDI RIGOLETTO Melodrama in three acts From the original subject "Le roi s'amuse" by Victor Hugo, Giuseppe Verdi elaborates the first opera of the so-called "popular trilogy" (together with Il Trovatore and La traviata) in which he affirms his dramatic genius of 1950s. The censorship at the time forbade the representation of a libertine king and the character - Francis I of France in Hugo - had to be replaced with an anonymous Duke of Mantua (recognizable perhaps in a Vincenzo I Gonzaga). But the real protagonist of the drama is Rigoletto, the court jester, a sad jester infused with a dramatic power that was unprecedented in the history of the Opera. Around him the passions of the other characters are stirred: the utopian love and then betrayed by his daughter Gilda, the arrogant and cynical Duke of Mantua, the voluptuous Magdalene, the double game of courtiers. A story destined to end in tragedy in the name of the "terrible" revenge hatched by Rigoletto to save the honor of his daughter. It will be he himself, in fact, to suffer the consequences.
