Giuseppe Verdi succeeded in 1851 with Rigoletto after long years of searching and experimenting, the first great masterpiece. The 37-year-old composer himself believed that he would never be able to create something so beautiful again. Verdi had transformed the musical means of beautiful Italian singing in such a way that they followed the drama from the first to the last note with merciless consistency. It is not for nothing that Rigoletto, together with the following works Il Trovatore and La Traviata, still belongs to the “Trilogia popolare”, one of Verdi's most frequently performed operas.

The material is based on Victor Hugo's play Le roi s'amuse (1832), which Verdi praised as "perhaps the greatest modern drama". "Triboulet," the equivalent of Rigoletto in the original, "is worthy of a Shakespeare invention!" The outsider Rigoletto moves in the orbit of a powerful man, the Duke of Matua, who tolerates him as an eccentric. Rigoletto covers the victims of the Duke's insatiable lust with biting mockery. Nothing is sacred to him - except his own daughter Gilda. In order to protect them from being stalked by the Duke, he keeps them hidden from all the world. When Rigoletto mocks Count Monterone, whose daughter was seduced by the Duke, the Duke hurls a terrible curse at him - and this curse now weighs on Rigoletto. He completely loses his feet after learning that his own daughter has fallen in love with the Duke. With the help of the killer Sparafucile, he wants to put an end to the Duke's trade once and for all. But this decision has a monstrous result.
