Cursing love, the Nibelung Alberich obtains the (Rhine) gold treasure and uses it to forge a ring that gives its owner “limitless power”. When Wotan and Loge tricked him into stealing the valuable piece, he cursed it: from now on the ring should enslave its owner and fill him with worry, envy and fear. The first victim of the curse is the giant Fasolt, who is killed by his brother Fafner in the fight for the gold. Fafner grabs gold and ring and withdraws with it to guard the hoard like a dragon. With a heavy heart, Wotan lets him go and moves with his family into the stately home "Walhall" that Fasolt and Fafner built. There he will calmly develop a strategy with which he can get the ring back...
