Extravagant, dazzling and full of relish – in the post-war period of the 1920s people recaptured life with unrestrained exuberance. Youthfulness, modernity and new beginnings were the buzzwords of the hour and also made themselves felt on the opera stages. While skirts became shorter and shorter and operettas ever more rampant, people discovered the truth of everyday life in opera. Here the genres converged, and Léhar also stated: “The success of an operetta depends to a large extent on a good libretto. The characters in the play must be drawn true to life […].”

The melodies of these works brought joy, comfort and confidence to people in the 1920s and have
not lost their power to this day – the 2020s: from “lips are silent” (from Lehár’s The Merry Widow ) to “Heia, heia, in den Bergen ist mein Heimatland” (from Kálmán's Die Csárdásfürstin ) to “O mio babbino caro” (from Puccini's Gianni Schicchi ).

Kurt Tucholsky was cynical: "Puccini is the little man's Verdi, and Lehár is the little man's Puccini." But he was right to name them in the same breath, because they both had a lasting influence on their time. Puccini's music, which is committed to the style of bel canto and is sometimes enriched with colorful or modern sounds, seduces with its large arcs of melody to indulge. Kálmán shaped both the Hungarian operetta and the arrival of the Broadway sound on the German stage. And the works of Lehár, whom Hugo von Hofmannsthal praised for the lightness of his style, saw around 300,000 performances in the first half of the last century.

Mit dem Musical Cabaret, der Operette Gräfin Mariza und der Opern- und Operetten-Gala Roaring Oper(ett)a, präsentiert von Götz Alsmann, hat sich die Oper Dortmund in der aktuellen Spielzeit mit gleich drei Produktionen der glanzvollen Epoche der „Wilden Zwanziger“ verschrieben.

Extravagant, schillernd und lustvoll – mit hemmungsloser Ausgelassenheit eroberte man sich in der Nachkriegszeit der 1920er-Jahre das Leben zurück. Jugendlichkeit, Moderne und Aufbruch waren die Schlagwörter der Stunde und machten sich ebenfalls auf den Opernbühnen jener Jahre bemerkbar. Die Melodien der bis heute beliebten Werke haben bereits den Menschen in den 1920er-Jahren Freude, Trost und Zuversicht gespendet – und auch heute, in die 2020er-Jahre, kann man sich der sinnesbetörenden Kraft dieser Musik nicht entziehen.

Doch was verbindet eigentlich die Opern von Giacomo Puccini und Erich Wolfgang Korngold mit den Operetten von Emmerich Kálmán und Franz Lehar? Schon Kurt Tucholskys wusste zu attestieren: „Puccini ist der Verdi des kleinen Mannes, und Lehár ist dem kleinen Mann sein Puccini.“ – Tatsächlich scheint sich in den Opern, Operetten und Tanzmelodien jener Jahre das pulsierende Lebensgefühl einer im Umbruch befindlichen Gesellschaft am Rande des Abgrunds in faszinierender Weise konserviert zu haben – und lädt das Publikum bis heute zu einem berauschenden „Tanz auf dem Vulkan“ ein.
