This year, Rudolf Buchbinder is presenting Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 23 in F minor, a work that was viewed with skepticism when it was published in 1807: In the first movement of this sonata, he once again unleashed many evil spirits, as one would expect from this already know other of his great sonatas , complained a critic in the Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung. However, Beethoven himself considered the piece to be one of his best, and ever since an enterprising publisher gave it the nickname Appassionata in 1838 , it has been considered the epitome of pianistic virtuosity and expressiveness.
The melody of the French folk song Ah, vous dirai-je, Maman is in German-speaking countries from the song Tomorrow comes Santa Clausknown. The original is about a beautiful brunette confessing to her mother that she loves a certain Silvandre. What begins as a folk song that is easy to sing along becomes a succession of pianistic challenges and surprises in Mozart's Twelve Variations - including longing love yearning - which finally culminates in a virtuoso finale. Schubert's last four impromptus are also much more complex than the term, which describes a short improvisation or a surprising idea, initially suggests. Robert Schumann thought he could even recognize a four-movement sonata in the four individual pieces that Schubert composed about a year before his death.

Heuer präsentiert Rudolf Buchbinder mit Beethovens Klaviersonate Nr. 23 f-Moll ein Werk, das bei seiner Veröffentlichung im Jahre 1807 noch durchaus skeptisch zur Kenntnis genommen wurde: In dem ersten Satze dieser Sonate hat er einmal wieder viele böse Geister losgelassen, wie man dieses aus andern seiner großen Sonaten schon kennet, moserte ein Kritiker in der Allgemeinen musikalischen Zeitung. Beethoven selbst hielt das Stück jedoch für eines seiner besten, und spätestens seit ein geschäftstüchtiger Verleger es im Jahre 1838 mit dem Beinamen Appassionata versah, gilt es als Inbegriff pianistischer Virtuosität und Expressivität.
Die Melodie des französischen Volkslieds Ah, vous dirai-je, Maman ist im deutschsprachigen Raum aus dem Lied Morgen kommt der Weihnachtsmann bekannt. Im Original handelt es sich um das Geständnis einer schönen Brünetten an ihre Mutter, einen gewissen Silvandre zu lieben. Was als einfach mitzusingendes Volkslied beginnt, wird in Mozarts Zwölf Variationen zu einer Abfolge pianistischer Herausforderungen und Überraschungen – sehnsüchtiges Liebesschmachten inklusive –, die schließlich in einem virtuosen Finale gipfeln. Auch Schuberts vier letzte Impromptus sind deutlich komplexer, als es der Begriff zunächst nahelegt, der eine kurze Improvisation oder einen überraschenden Einfall bezeichnet. Robert Schumann meinte in den vier Einzelstücken, die Schubert etwa ein Jahr vor seinem Tod komponierte, gar eine viersätzige Sonate zu erkennen.
