To take on human form is Rusalka's dearest wish, because the mermaid has fallen in love with a prince who hunted near her lake. In order to be able to follow him, no sacrifice is too great for her: So she not only leaves her ancestral spirit realm, but also has to sell her voice to the witch Ježibaba in order to be able to take the step into the human world. However, she is out of luck there. If the prince was initially fascinated by the strange magic of the mermaid, he soon succumbed to the hot-blooded eroticism of a strange princess. Deeply desperate, Rusalka wants to return to the spirit realm, but has to realize that she has long been an outcast there too. The spirit and human world in Dvořák's 'Rusalka' are incompatible:

All the more eloquent, however, is Dvořák's music: in its passionate romanticism, it paints a lively image of the troubled psyche of the mermaid and thus, paradoxically, gives her the kind of humanity that she longs for so much. Hinrich Horstkotte is responsible for directing and setting the opera.
