The libretto of Dvořák's most famous opera, premiered in Prague in 1901, is inspired by the Czech version of the Central European folk legend that we also know through  Undine  (1811) by Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué and  The Little Mermaid  (1837) by Hans Christian Andersen. The original story finds a perfect musical translation in a score full of magic and color in which it is possible to guess the Wagnerian influence, specifically, in the river currents of  The Ring of the Nibelung .

 

It also has notable similarities to another great aquatic fable of sacrifice and redemption,  Sadko  (1898) by Rimsky-Kórsakov, all without renouncing the bohemian roots that the composer, as an artist committed to Czech music and national culture, imprinted on the most of his creations. Rusalka  soon conquered the German-speaking countries, but his international emergence was slow in coming despite the celebrity of his “Song of the Moon”. Since the last decades of the last century, its presence on stage has not stopped consolidating until it has become one of the twenty most performed operas of our days despite the fact that, surprisingly, it has never been performed at the Teatro Real since its reopening. .

Witness Dvořák’s beloved and engrossing opera Rusalka from the stage of Madrid’s Teatro Real! A successful production requires a highly gifted soprano, and the mesmerizing Asmik Grigorian is more than up to the challenge, bringing vibrant life to the title role as Eric Cutler and Karita Mattila step smoothly into the royal personas of prince and princess. The music of Dvořák’s masterwork is expertly conducted by Ivor Bolton, while Christof Loy’s stage direction and scenography by Johannes Leiacker beautifully complement Klevis Elmazaj's expert choreography.
