In the vocal repertoire, many contemporary techniques are closely linked to the early phases of cultured western music history, seeking the essential features that make the timbre of the voice the primary and primitive element of the sound experience.
The collections of laude (morning prayers) by Gavin Bryars is based on the spirit of the 13th C. Cortona collection of laude. Bryars follows the original compositions, closely adopting the same number of notes present in a syllable.
Giacinto Scelsi considered the human voice a device to explore the universe of sound. His Three Latin Prayers reveal how interested and fascinated he was by Gregorian chant.
Sonnekus2 by John Cage is a series of nine short pieces with texts based on the First Book of Moses (Genesis): very simple melodies exalt the central role of the timbre of the voice and the intelligibility of the declaimed text.
These two aspects underpin Der Turm zu Babel, a cycle of melodies (each one sung in a different language with its peculiar sonority) for the solo voice of Mauricio Kagel, an Argentinian composer who moved to Germany; and Benediktionen by the German composer Nikolaus Brass, comprising four fragments without text in which sound is the only main character, whether generated by the voice, by snapping fingers or by rubbing hands.

Nel repertorio vocale, molte tecniche contemporanee si riallacciano strettamente ai primi passi della storia della musica colta occidentale, ricercando quell’essenzialità che rende l’aspetto timbrico della voce l’elemento primario e primordiale dell’esperienza sonora.
La collezione di laude di Gavin Bryars si basa sullo spirito delle laude della collezione di Cortona del XIII secolo. Bryars rispetta per le composizioni originarie, aderendo il più possibile allo stesso numero di note presenti in una sillaba.
Per Giacinto Scelsi, la voce umana è un mezzo per sondare il cosmo del suono. Le sue Three Latin Prayers testimoniano l’interesse e il fascino che in lui ha suscitato il canto gregoriano.
Sonnekus2 di John Cage è una serie di nove brevi brani con testi basati sul Primo Libro di Mosè (Genesi): melodie molto semplici, che esaltano il ruolo centrale del timbro della voce e l’intelligibilità della declamazione del testo.
Due aspetti su cui sono incentrati Der Turm zu Babel, ciclo di melodie (ognuna intonata in una lingua diversa, di cui si impone la sonorità) per voce sola di Mauricio Kagel, compositore argentino trapiantato in Germania; e Benediktionen del compositore tedesco Nikolaus Brass: quattro frammenti senza in cui il suono è l’unico padrone della scena, sia esso generato dalla voce, dallo schioccare delle dita, dallo sfregamento delle mani.
