March 1930: The Great Depression begins, the clouds in Europe begin to thicken. Three years before the rise to power of Hitler (and six before that of John Metaxas), two new musical plays satirize the tense climate of the time through the sarcastic distortion of didactic ethnography. The most famous of the two, The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagoni by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weil, a brazen satire of capitalism and the commercialized bourgeois opera, premieres in Leipzig on March 9, bringing to the present day its "resin". Few now remember that, three days earlier, on March 6, at the "Montial" theater in Athens, corner of Panepistimiou and Emmanuel Benaki, our play premiered no less poignant, melodic and ruthless: the "satirical phantasmagoria" Sataneri by Theophrastus Sakellaridis, greatest of the composers of the Athenian operetta and creator of the cosmopolitan Baptist. Something like a distorted adaptation of Faust from the other side, Sataneri is an ethnographic work that unequivocally excels… the supremacy of hell over paradise and advocates, just as boldly and ironically as Mahagoni, the benefits of modern immorality over traditional! In great spirits, based on his own original idea, Sakellaridis mixes romantic arias with folk, rebetika, blues and fox-trot and satirizes the current, as well as timeless Greek impunity through the story of Andreas, an unfortunate "seller" , who, at the eternal crossroads of virtue and evil, chooses the second path,
The performance of the Musical Theater Laboratory of DI.PE.THE. Patras is the first post-war stage revival of the play.
The Musical Theater Laboratory of DI.PE.THE. Patras was created in January 2013, following the initiative of the director of DI.PE.THE. Patras, Thodoris Ambazi, and was staffed by talented young singers.
