John Adams’ opera Doctor Atomic vertelt over de ontwikkeling van de atoombom door Robert Oppenheimer. De originele opera uit 2005 wil niet zozeer de historische gebeurtenissen navertellen, maar focust op de drijfveren en psychologie van de betrokken personen (Robert Oppenheimer, Kitty Oppenheimer, en een handvol wetenschappers van het Manhattan Project). Ook de symfonie die Adams enkele jaren later componeerde op basis van materiaal uit zijn opera, vertelt hoe ongeremde kennishonger de mens kan drijven tot zijn eigen destructie. Philip Glass’ Icarus at the Edge of Time vertelt dan weer het verhaal van een jongen die vanuit een onstilbare nieuwsgierigheid naar een zwart gat reist. Michaël Pas is verteller in een muzikaal verhaal waarin de mythologische Icarus-figuur een nieuwe invulling krijgt: zijn drang naar het onbereikbare doet hem niet uit de hemel neer tuimelen, maar doet hem een van Einsteins grootste inzichten ervaren. Acrobaat Robin Witt kruipt in de huid van Icarus, en maakt van deze avond een waar spektakel. Als dramatisch tegenwicht van Adams’ Doctor Atomic Symphony biedt Glass’ Icarus at the Edge of Time een positieve kijk op de menselijke drang om de grenzen van kennis, en van zijn eigen vergankelijkheid, op hun spankracht te testen.

John Adams' opera Doctor Atomic tells the story of the development of the atomic bomb by Robert Oppenheimer. The original opera from 2005 does not so much recount the historical events, but focuses on the motivations and psychology of the involved individuals (Robert Oppenheimer, Kitty Oppenheimer, and a handful of scientists from the Manhattan Project). Additionally, the symphony that Adams composed a few years later based on material from his opera illustrates how unchecked thirst for knowledge can drive humanity to its own destruction. Philip Glass' Icarus at the Edge of Time, on the other hand, tells the story of a boy who travels to a black hole out of insatiable curiosity. Michaël Pas serves as the narrator in a musical story where the mythological figure of Icarus is redefined: his longing for the unattainable does not cause him to fall from the sky, but allows him to experience one of Einstein's greatest insights. Acrobat Robin Witt takes on the role of Icarus, turning this evening into a spectacular event. As a dramatic counterbalance to Adams' Doctor Atomic Symphony, Glass' Icarus at the Edge of Time offers a positive perspective on humanity's drive to test the limits of knowledge and its own impermanence.

L'opéra Doctor Atomic de John Adams raconte le développement de la bombe atomique par Robert Oppenheimer. L'opéra original de 2005 ne cherche pas tant à raconter les événements historiques qu'à se concentrer sur les motivations et la psychologie des personnes impliquées (Robert Oppenheimer, Kitty Oppenheimer, et quelques scientifiques du Projet Manhattan). La symphonie que Adams a composée quelques années plus tard à partir du matériel de son opéra raconte également comment la soif insatiable de connaissance peut conduire l'homme à sa propre destruction. Icarus at the Edge of Time de Philip Glass raconte quant à lui l'histoire d'un garçon qui, par une curiosité insatiable, voyage vers un trou noir. Michaël Pas est le narrateur d'une histoire musicale où la figure mythologique d'Icarus prend une nouvelle dimension : son désir de l'inaccessible ne le fait pas chuter du ciel, mais lui fait vivre l'une des plus grandes découvertes d'Einstein. L'acrobate Robin Witt se glisse dans la peau d'Icarus et fait de cette soirée un véritable spectacle.
