George has been a salesman in Maraczek's perfumery for fifteen years. But as successful as he is in his professional life, he suffers from loneliness in his private life. He recently started an anonymous pen pals through a personal ad - and immediately fell in love. To his annoyance, however, the new colleague Amalia is put in front of his nose in the store. On the day of George's first date with his as yet unknown loved one, Amalia also insists on being able to call it a day. The boss, who dislikes the latest window dressing, demands that George work overtime. One word leads to another, George loses his nerve and quits. When he finally arrives - unfortunately late - at the agreed rendezvous in the café, Surprisingly, Amalia is also sitting there. Coincidence?

For their musical, which premiered in 1963, Jerry Bock, the composer of “Anatevka”, and Joe Masteroff, the librettist of “Cabaret”, used the Hungarian comedy “Perfumery” by Miklós László as a template, which was also the model for the romantic comedy “E-Mail für dich “With Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. Jerry Bock's music won a Grammy.
