The 4th Philharmonic Concert brings together pieces that were beacons of the avant-garde in their day and have become classic today. The silent orchestra in Cage's "4'33''" is both musical gimmicky and deep spiritual reflection. With it, Cage created one of the iconic works of the modern age. In his "Atmosphères" Ligeti does without interval harmony, rhythm and compositional technique and instead makes the orchestra the place of origin of a magical sound space, a "musical labyrinth filled with sounds and delicate noises". Gustav Mahler begins the 20th century in his 5th symphony with a funeral march, escalates it to “chaos that forever gives birth to a new world” and leads it to the Adagietto, which emerges from silence and leads back into it.
