Wer von der Neunten spricht, bezieht sich meist immer noch auf Beethovens imposantes letztes sinfonisches Werk. Der letzte Satz aus seiner 9. Sinfonie mit dem Chor Ode an die Freude hat längst Kultstatus erreicht. So monumental ist dieses Werk, dass sich Komponist*innen nach Beethoven damit schwertaten, sich überhaupt an ihre eigene Nummer neun zu wagen. Der ‹Fluch der 9. Sinfonie› hauchte sowohl Schubert wie auch Bruckner während der Komposition ihrer Neunten das Leben aus. Mahler, der sich in seinem Aberglauben bestätigt fühlte, nannte seine Sinfonie Nr. 9 sicherheitshalber Das Lied von der Erde und setzte erst nach deren Vollendung seine Nummerierung fort. Beethovens 70-minütige Sinfonie ist auch insofern bemerkenswert, als der Komponist bei deren Komposition bereits taub war. Bei der Uraufführung des Werks soll er nicht einmal mehr den Applaus des Publikums wahrgenommen haben. Unter der Leitung von Ivor Bolton führt das Sinfonieorchester Basel mit Solist*innen des Theater Basel die klanggewaltige Neunte zum feierlichen Jahreswechsel im Stadtcasino Basel und im Theater Basel auf.

Anyone who speaks of the  Ninth  is usually still referring to Beethoven's impressive last symphonic work. The last movement from his 9th symphony with the chorus  Ode to Joy  has long since achieved cult status. This work is so monumental that composers after Beethoven found it difficult to even dare to write their own number nine. The 'curse of the Ninth Symphony' breathed life out of both Schubert and Bruckner during the composition of their  Ninth  . Mahler, who felt his superstitions were confirmed, called his Symphony No. 9  Das Lied von der Erde to be on the safe side and continued its numbering only after its completion. Beethoven's 70-minute symphony is also notable in that the composer was already deaf when it was composed. At the premiere of the work, he is said not even to have noticed the applause of the audience. Conducted by Ivor Bolton, the Basel Symphony Orchestra and soloists from Theater Basel will be performing the powerful  Ninth  at the festive turn of the year at Stadtcasino Basel and Theater Basel.
