Верди написал «Симона Бокканегру» в пору своего расцвета. К 1857 году он уже создал и «Травиату», и «Риголетто», и «Трубадура»: каждая из этих опер открывала новые пути для оперного искусства и была проникнута социальным пафосом, что всегда вызывало проблемы с цензурой. «Симон Бокканегра» больше похож на ранние вердиевские произведения – «Набукко» или «Аттилу», в которых нашли отклик идеи объединения Италии, подъема национального духа и сопротивления захватчикам. Главный герой, правда, не ведет войн и не противодействует им, а занимается лишь внутриполитическими конфликтами, но их обстоятельства испытывают на прочность его человеческое достоинство.

Критика была благосклонна к новой опере Верди, чего нельзя сказать о публике, которая полюбила «Симона Бокканегру» только в ХХ веке. Возможно, дело было в запутанном либретто, в необычной смелости музыкального языка или же в том, что Верди минимизировал использование выразительных приемов стиля бельканто, лишив певцов головокружительных каденций, арий с эффектными высокими нотами и разнообразными колоратурами и фиоритурами. Соблюдя формальные правила компоновки оперы, композитор совершенно изменил ее дух. «Бокканегра», избавленный от ярких примет бельканто, парадоксальным образом стал похож на оперы тех времен, когда Верди из-за неопытности использовал эти приемы с осторожностью. У главного героя даже нет большой сольной арии, ее заменяет сцена с хором и солистами «Plebe, patrizi, popolo!» («Плебеи, патриции, народ!»). Для оперы середины XIX века это было крайне необычно, но такое решение пошло на пользу образу дожа. Как любой облеченный властью человек, он, хоть и вершит чужие судьбы, свою судьбу тоже ставит в зависимость от действий других людей. Когда создавшиеся обстоятельства неисправимо мрачны, лучшее, что остается, – сделать правильный моральный выбор.

Постановка Андреа Де Розы была перенесена в Мариинский из итальянских театров Карло Феличе (Генуя) и Ла Фениче (Венеция). Она сочетает в себе исторические костюмы и минимальное сценическое оформление: добрую часть сцены занимает постоянно меняющаяся черная стена, в которой то открываются двери, то появляются ренессансные венецианские окна, то она обнажается до своей решетчатой структуры. Намеренная условность пространства позволяет высветить оттенки актерской игры, сфокусироваться на сложных взаимоотношениях персонажей. На протяжении всего спектакля на задник сцены проецируется видео с удивительной красоты видами Лигурийского моря, что сопровождают действие и откликаются на него переменой света. Водная гладь здесь выступает тем горизонтом, к которому внутренне устремлен Симон Бокканегра, символом свободы и чистоты его души. Денис Великжанин

Verdi wrote "Simon Boccanegra" at the time of his heyday. By 1857, he had already created La Traviata, Rigoletto, and Il trovatore: each of these operas opened new avenues for operatic art and was imbued with social pathos, which always caused censorship problems. "Simon Boccanegra" is more like Verdi's early works - "Nabucco" or "Attila", in which the ideas of unifying Italy, raising the national spirit and resisting the invaders resonated. The main character, however, does not wage wars and does not oppose them, but deals only with internal political conflicts, but their circumstances test his human dignity for strength.

Criticism was favorable to Verdi's new opera, which cannot be said about the public, which fell in love with Simon Boccanegra only in the 20th century. Perhaps it was in the confusing libretto, in the unusual boldness of the musical language, or in the fact that Verdi minimized the use of expressive techniques of the bel canto style, depriving the singers of dizzying cadences, arias with spectacular high notes and various coloratura and graces. Observing the formal rules of the composition of the opera, the composer completely changed its spirit. Boccanegra, freed from the bright signs of bel canto, paradoxically became similar to the operas of those times when Verdi, due to inexperience, used these techniques with caution. The protagonist doesn't even have a big solo aria, it is replaced by a scene with the choir and soloists "Plebe, patrizi, popolo!" ("Plebeians, patricians, people!"). This was extremely unusual for an opera in the middle of the 19th century, but such a decision benefited the image of the doge. Like any person invested with power, although he decides other people's destinies, he also makes his fate dependent on the actions of other people. When the circumstances are irreparably bleak, the best thing left is to make the right moral choice.

The production by Andrea De Rosa was transferred to the Mariinsky from the Italian theaters Carlo Felice (Genoa) and La Fenice (Venice). It combines historical costumes and minimal stage design: a good part of the stage is occupied by an ever-changing black wall, in which doors open, then Renaissance Venetian windows appear, then it is exposed to its lattice structure. The intentional conventionality of the space makes it possible to highlight the shades of the acting game, to focus on the complex relationships of the characters. Throughout the performance, a video with amazingly beautiful views of the Ligurian Sea is projected on the back of the stage, which accompanies the action and responds to it with a change in light. The water surface here acts as the horizon towards which Simon Boccanegra is internally striving, a symbol of freedom and purity of his soul.Denis Velikzhanin
