"The human heart is a source of eternal suffering," says Verdi's opera, which is particularly appreciated by connoisseurs. The title character Simon Boccanegra has to realize in the course of the story that it seems impossible to combine power and love and still be happy. As in "Rigoletto" or "Luisa Miller", the composer also addresses a complicated and tragic father-daughter relationship in "Simon Boccanegra" - and has implemented this musically with great inspiration. In doing so, he links the personal emotions of his characters with political and social issues such as the struggle for power.

„Das Herz des Menschen ist ein Quell ewigen Leides“, heißt es in dieser von Kennern besonders geschätzten Oper Verdis. Dass es unmöglich zu sein scheint Macht und Liebe zu vereinen und trotzdem glücklich zu werden, muss auch die Titelfigur Simon Boccanegra im Laufe der Handlung erkennen. Wie in „Rigoletto“ oder „Luisa Miller“ thematisiert der Komponist auch in „Simon Boccanegra“ eine komplizierte und tragische Vater-Tochter-Beziehung – und hat diese mit großer Inspiration musikalisch umgesetzt. Dabei verknüpft er persönliche Emotionen seiner Figuren mit politischen und gesellschaftlichen Themen wie den Kampf um Macht.
