Jason Robert Browns erstes Musical, uraufgeführt 1995 in New York am Off-Broadway, ist eigentlich ein szenischer Zyklus von 16 Songs, der den Bogen von der Hoffnung von Auswanderern im Jahr 1492 auf einem spanischen Segelschiff über die Verheißung der Weihnachtsbotschaft oder die amerikanische Revolution von 1775 bis hin zu ganz alltäglichen Situationen in der Jetztzeit spannt. In allen Szenen werden Menschen gezeigt, die an einem dramatischen Wendepunkt ihres Lebens stehen und Entscheidungen treffen müssen, entweder für den nächsten Schritt in eine vielleicht ungewisse Zukunft oder für das Verharren im Stillstand. Da gibt es die reiche New Yorkerin, die überlegt, aus dem Fenster ihres noblen Penthouses zu springen, oder den Häftling in einer Zelle, der sich als „King of the world“ sieht, oder die Frau von Santa Claus, die dessen Affären mit den Engeln nicht mehr erträgt. Vier Darsteller*innen schlüpfen in den einzelnen Episoden in die unterschiedlichen Charaktere, und doch schimmert stets die Hoffnung auf eine bessere, neue Welt durch.

Die Musik der „Songs For A New World“ weist eine stilistische Breite von Pop, Gospel, Jazz und Funk auf. In der kleinen Band mit Bass, Drums und Percussion übernimmt – wie immer bei Jason Robert Brown – vor allem der virtuose Klavierpart eine dominierende Rolle in der Begleitung der Sängerdarsteller*innen.


Der mittlerweile mehrfach mit Tony Awards ausgezeichnete Komponist und Songschreiber Jason Robert Brown (*1970) gehört derzeit zu den originellsten und kreativsten Köpfen der amerikanischen Musicalszene, ohne sich den kommerziellen Gesetzen des Broadway zu unterwerfen. Sein Musical „The Last Five Years“ („Die letzten fünf Jahre“) über das Scheitern einer Beziehung wurde 2011 mit großem Erfolg am Pfalztheater gezeigt.

Jason Robert Brown's first musical, which premiered on Off-Broadway in New York in 1995, is actually a scenic cycle of 16 songs, spanning the arc from the hope of emigrants in 1492 on a Spanish sailing ship to the promise of the Christmas message or the American Revolution of 1775 to everyday situations in the present. All scenes show people who are at a dramatic turning point in their lives and who have to make decisions, either for the next step into a perhaps uncertain future or for staying still. There's the wealthy New Yorker contemplating jumping out of her fancy penthouse window, or the prisoner in a cell who sees himself as the "king of the world," or Santa Claus's wife, who can no longer endure his affairs with the angels. Four actors slip into the different characters in the individual episodes, and yet the hope for a better, new world always shimmers through.

The music of "Songs For A New World" shows a stylistic breadth of pop, gospel, jazz and funk. In the small band with bass, drums and percussion - as always with Jason Robert Brown - the virtuoso piano part plays a dominant role in the accompaniment of the singer-actors.


The composer and songwriter Jason Robert Brown (*1970), who has meanwhile won several Tony Awards, is currently one of the most original and creative minds on the American musical scene, without submitting to the commercial laws of Broadway. His musical "The Last Five Years" about the failure of a relationship was shown in 2011 with great success at the Pfalztheater.
