OFFICIAL OPENING CONCERT TRONDHEIM JAZZ FESTIVAL 2023

Stian Carstensen is perhaps best known from the band Farmers Market, which has been going for 30 years. He also took part in Ravi's program "Landeplage" on NRK, where he improvised versions of well-known pop songs in a caravan. Stian was away from music for 2 years due to mental and physical illness, but last year he returned with the critically acclaimed album Musical Sanatorium , which was nominated for the Nordic Council's music prize, and which won NOPA's music prize in 2021.

The self-composed material is based on classical music, Balkan music and prog rock. Stian has also made a spectacular music video for the song Hippocampus Serenade which is available on YouTube for public viewing.

When he comes to Trondheim to play with TSO, he brings his own compositions, including from the new record, but also more unknown material, Bulgarian traditional melodies in non-traditional arrangements, humorous shows with more or less bizarre themes, languid ballroom music with pedal steel guitar as soloist instrument, bagpipes, banjo, kaval and of course accordion.

In addition, Stian is a presenter with his extraordinary word-clover tourettes, and likes to inform the audience about extreme curiosities from the stage. Among other things, it has been found that "God save the Queen" was written in connection with the world's first successful rectal operation performed on Louis the 14th in 1686 to celebrate the triumph of science, which undeniably puts the widespread British self-celebration in place.

Stian Carstensen er kanskje mest kjent fra bandet Farmers Market som har holdt på i 30 år. Han deltok også i Ravis program «Landeplage» på NRK, hvor han improviserte versjoner av kjente poplåter i ei campingvogn. Stian var borte fra musikken i 2 år pga. psykisk og fysisk sykdom, men i fjor kom han tilbake med det kritikerroste albumet Musical Sanatorium som blant annet ble nominert til Nordisk råds musikkpris, og som fikk NOPAs musikkpris i 2021.

Materialet som er selvkomponert tar utgangspunkt i klassisk musikk, balkanmusikk og progrock. Stian har også laget en spektakulær musikkvideo til låta Hippocampus Serenade som ligger på YouTube til offentlig skue.

Når han kommer til Trondheim for å spille med TSO, har han med seg egne komposisjoner, blant annet fra den nye platen, men også mer ukjent materiale, bulgarske tradisjonelle melodier i utradisjonelle arrangementer, humoristiske viser med mer eller mindre bisarre temaer, smektende ballroommusikk med pedal steelgitar som solistinstrument, sekkepipe, banjo, kaval og sjølsagt trekkspill.

I tillegg er Stian konferansier med sin usedvanlige ordkløver-tourettes, og orienterer gjerne publikum om ekstrem-kuriosa fra scenen. Man har blant annet funnet ut at "God save the Queen" er skrevet i forbindelse med verdens første vellykkede rektaloperasjon utført på Ludvig den 14 i 1686 for å feire vitenskapens triumf, noe som unektelig setter den utbredte britiske selvhøytidligheten på plass.
