This concert will give us a series of South American flavors. George Gershwin’s Cuban Overture was inspired by the composer’s experience of a two-week holiday in Havana, Cuba. It is a rich and exciting work with Caribbean rhythms and native Cuban percussion, as with Gershwin’s other instrumental works, rich in colors and technique.

The musical WEST SIDE STORY, composed by the Broadway choreographer, composer and conductor, Leonard Bernstein, is based on Shakespeare’s famous love tragedy ROMEO AND JULIET, This Musical depicts the story of two young boys and girls who fall in love with each other but are in rival groups, and how they cross the gap between them, only to fail miserably. The musical is set in the Puerto Rican immigrant community where Latino-American immigrants engaged in frequent conflicts.

Ginestra was an Argentine composer and is considered one of the most important 20th century South American composers. PANAMBI and ESTANCIA are two of his ballet works. His works often incorporate themes from Argentine folk music, and the exhilarating rhythmic energy, captivating lyricism and hallucinatory atmosphere are some of the characteristics of his musical style.
