The climax of the concert of the NFM Wrocław Philharmonic will be the performance of a work sometimes called the "symphony of fate". This evening we will get to know them in the interpretation of the outstanding Latvian conductor Ainārs Rubiķis. The path to an excellent career was opened to the artist by victories at renowned competitions. In 2010 he won the Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition and a year later he received the Herbert von Karajan Young Conductors Award. He is the only conductor to have received both of these awards.

The first work in the concert program will be Cantus arcticus from 1972, written by Einojuhani Rautavaara, active in the second half of the 20th and early 21st centuries, who is considered the most outstanding Finnish composer after Jean Sibelius. In his work, subtitled "concert for birds and orchestra", the artist used the sounds of avifauna recorded by him during his stay in the Liminka area in northern Finland. They are accompanied by a sparing accompaniment of the orchestra, and the whole, in accordance with the intention of the creator, is to reflect the mood of a person wandering through the wilderness. At the beginning of the score, Rautavaara also placed an unusual performance tip - "think of autumn and of Tchaikovsky". Despite the use of the avant-garde compositional techniques of Cantus arcticuscaptivates the listener with a specific, oneiric mood and directness in expressing emotions. The work consists of three links: Marshes , Melancholy , and Migrating Swans . This will be followed by a concert for wind quintet (flute, oboe, clarinet, oboe and horn) and orchestra by Krzysztof Herdzin, commissioned by the LutosAir Quintet to celebrate the band's jubilee.

The evening will end with Symphony No. 5 in C minorLudwig van Beethoven. There was some controversy among early commentators about the meaning of the famous opening theme of this work. The creator's secretary, Anton Schindler, claimed that the composer pointed out this fragment of the score to him, saying "this is how fate knocks at the door", while Beethoven's student Carl Czerny claimed that the master was inspired by the rhythm of a bunting he heard during one of his walks. We will never know what the truth is, but two things are certain. Firstly, it was an undisputed masterpiece that took a permanent place in the orchestral repertoire. Secondly, the story of an artist fighting with destiny and winning turned out to be much more successful than the story of birdsong. It was in this context that various composers quoted this motif, such as Johannes Brahms (Song of Destiny ) or Dmitri Shostakovich ( First Violin Concerto ). It also appears in other works by Beethoven: in a much milder form at the beginning of the Fourth Piano Concerto and in a form basically identical to the symphony in the Harp Quartet.

Punktem kulminacyjnym koncertu NFM Filharmonii Wrocławskiej będzie wykonanie dzieła nazywanego czasem „symfonią losu”. Tego wieczoru poznamy je w interpretacji wyśmienitego łotewskiego dyrygenta Ainārsa Rubiķisa. Drogę do znakomitej kariery otworzyły artyście zwycięstwa podczas renomowanych konkursów. W 2010 roku wygrał Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition, a rok później otrzymał Herbert von Karajan Young Conductors Award. Jest jedynym dyrygentem, który otrzymał oba te wyróżnienia.

Pierwszym dziełem w programie koncertu będzie Cantus arcticus z 1972 roku, autorstwa działającego w drugiej połowie XX i na początku XXI wieku Einojuhani Rautavaara, który uznawany jest za najwybitniejszego fińskiego kompozytora po Jeanie Sibeliusie. W swoim utworze, noszącym podtytuł „koncert na ptaki i orkiestrę” artysta wykorzystał odgłosy awifauny zarejestrowane przez niego podczas pobytu w obszarze Liminka na północy Finlandii. Towarzyszy im oszczędny akompaniament orkiestry, a całość, zgodnie z intencją twórcy, oddawać ma nastrój osoby wędrującej przez głuszę. Na początku partytury Rautavaara umieścił też niecodzienną wskazówkę wykonawczą – „think of autumn and of Tchaikovsky”. Pomimo zastosowania awangardowych technik kompozytorskich Cantus arcticus ujmuje słuchającego specyficznym, onirycznym nastrojem i bezpośredniością w wyrażaniu emocji. Dzieło składa się z trzech ogniw: Bagna, Melancholia i Migrujące łabędzie. Następnie zabrzmi koncert przeznaczony na kwintet dęty (flet, obój, klarnet, obój i waltornia) i orkiestrę autorstwa Krzysztofa Herdzina, powstały na zamówienie LutosAir Quintet z okazji jubileuszu zespołu.

Wieczór zwieńczy V Symfonia c-moll Ludwiga van Beethovena. Wśród wczesnych komentatorów panowały pewne kontrowersje dotyczące znaczenia sławnego motywu otwierającego to dzieło. Sekretarz twórcy, Anton Schindler, utrzymywał, że kompozytor wskazał mu ten fragment partytury, mówiąc „tak los puka do drzwi”, podczas gdy uczeń Beethovena Carl Czerny utrzymywał, że dla mistrza inspiracją był zasłyszany podczas jednego ze spacerów  rytm śpiewu trznadla. Nie dowiemy się już, jak jest prawda, ale pewne są dwie rzeczy. Po pierwsze – powstało niekwestionowane arcydzieło, które zajęło stałe miejsce w repertuarze orkiestrowym. Po drugie – historia artysty walczącego z przeznaczeniem i odnoszącego zwycięstwo okazała się o wiele bardziej nośna niż historia o ptasim śpiewie. W tym właśnie kontekście cytowali ten motyw przeróżni kompozytorzy, jak choćby Johannes Brahms (Pieśń przeznaczenia) czy Dymitr Szostakowicz (I Koncert skrzypcowy). Pojawia się on także w innych dziełach Beethovena: w znacznie łagodniejszej formie na początku IV Koncertu fortepianowego i w postaci w zasadzie identycznej jak w symfonii w Kwartecie „Harfowym”.
