Water parties were not something exclusive to Handel's time. These types of commemorative processions carried out on barges –or re-enactments of naval battles held on rivers or lakes– are widely documented throughout the Renaissance and Baroque periods, with milestones noted in Lyon, Paris, Edinburgh, Saxony, Savoy, Florence, Pisa, the Buen Retiro in Madrid and –of course– Venice. Although we only know a small portion of the music used in this type of event –such as the Wassermusik composed by Telemann for the city of Hamburg in 1723–, all of them have been overshadowed by Händel's Water Music, written for a pleasure trip of the King George I of England along the Thames in July 1717. The profane cantata "Il delirio amoroso" is also, in a way, the result of a royal whim. In this case, the ban on opera enacted in the Papal States by Pope Innocent XII in 1698, which would fully affect the "Roman" period of the Saxon composer. The cantata, composed in 1707 for Cardinal Pamphili, circumvents this ban by dressing the elegant and intimate atmosphere of the secular cantata with the vocal hedonism of opera, thus uniting the best of both worlds.
