Shostakovich’ Achtste symfonie is de tweede van drie oorlogssymfonieën die de Sovjetcomponist tussen 1941 en 1945 schreef. Het kolossale werk, stammend uit de donkerste dagen van de oorlog met Nazi- Duitsland, de beruchte Slag om Stalingrad, is misschien wel Shostakovich’ meest tragische compositie. In vijf bewegingen probeert Shostakovich in het reine te komen met buitensporiggeweld en eindeloos lijden, zowel emotioneel als filosofisch. Een duister noodlotsmotief opent de 30 minuten lange eerste beweging. Eenzame kreten van blaasinstrumenten klinken hol en versterken een gevoel van wanhoop en verlatenheid. Daarna komen de marsachtige tweede en derde bewegingen – “met elementen van een scherzo”. In het monomanische allegro non troppo hoorde de Duitse dirigent Kurt Sanderling het Niedergetrampelltwerden des Individuums (de vertrappeling van het individu). Met een passacaglia treurt Shostakovich in het vierde deel om het zonet gebeurde, waarna het vijfde deel de symfonie op zeer atypische wijze afsluit. Anders dan bij Mahlers Tweede symfonie, eveneens geschreven in de toonaard van do klein, is er bij Shostakovich geen plaats voor wederopstanding. Het pianissimo-einde duidt geen triomf maar een verslagen overleven aan, een verweesd naar huis krabbelen.

La Symphonie n°8 de Shostakovich est la deuxième des trois symphonies « de guerre » composées par ce compositeur soviétique entre 1941 et 1945. Cette œuvre colossale, écrite pendant les heures les plus sombres de la guerre avec l’Allemagne nazie, à l’époque de la tristement célèbre bataille de Stalingrad, est sans doute la plus tragique de Shostakovich. En cinq mouvements, le compositeur tente d’apprivoiser une violence inouïe et une interminable souffrance, tant sur le plan émotionnel que philosophique. Le premier mouvement, de près de 30 minutes, s’ouvre sur un motif sombre « de la destinée ». Les cris solitaires des instruments à vent sonnent creux et renforcent le sentiment de désespoir et de désolation. Lui succèdent le deuxième mouvement – une marche « avec des éléments de scherzo » – et un troisième mouvement monothématique allegro non troppo, qui évoque, selon le chef allemand Kurt Sanderling, le piétinement de l’individu (Niedergetrampelltwerden des Individuums). Dans une passacaille (quatrième mouvement), Shostakovich se lamente sur ce qui vient de se produire. La symphonie s’achève sur un cinquième mouvement atypique. Contrairement à la Deuxième symphonie de Mahler, également en do mineur, Shostakovich exclut toute perspective de renaissance. Le final pianissimo n'a ici rien de triomphal, le compositeur évoquant plutôt une survie dans la défaite, tel un orphelin rentrant chez lui.

Shostakovich’s Eighth Symphony is the second of three wartime symphonies the Soviet composer wrote between 1941 and 1945. This colossal work, which stemmed from the darkest days of the war with Nazi Germany with the infamous Battle of Stalingrad, is perhaps Shostakovich’s most tragic composition. In five movements, Shostakovich tries to come to terms with excessive violence and endless suffering, both emotionally and philosophically. A dark fate motif opens the 30-minutelong first movement. The lonely cries from the wind instruments sound hollow and reinforce a sense of despair and desolation. Next come the march-like second and third movements - “with elements of a scherzo”. In the monomaniacal allegro non troppo, German conductor Kurt Sanderling heard das Niedergetrampelltwerden des Individuums (the trampling of the individuals). With a passacaglia in the fourth movement, Shostakovich mourns what has just happened, after which the fifth movement closes the symphony in a very atypical way. Unlike Mahler’s Second symphony, also written in the key of C minor, Shostakovich makes no room for resurrection. The pianissimo ending does not indicate triumph, but a defeated survival, like an orphan returning home.
