Is there a larger sacred musical work from the 19th century? Beethoven's monumental "Missa solemnis" is probably the most important setting of the Mass in the German-speaking world of this time, going beyond any liturgical framework. He himself spoke of his "greatest work that I have written so far". It is a personal work of confession and translates an understanding of God purified by enlightenment and humanism into a sonic event. This gigantic choral symphony has an ending similar to the ninth symphony: the human, humanism triumphs, we hear the belief in a better world born of individual religiosity cast in tones. "From the heart - may it go again - to the heart", Beethoven wrote as a motto about it. This work was the first conducted by Sir Jeffrey Tate in January 2017 in the recently opened Elbphilharmonie. Now Sylvain Cambreling, Sir Jeffrey's successor as chief conductor, is taking on this great work in its fourth season.
