‘It is symphony, oratorio, music drama and redemptive mystery’, said Mahler of his Eighth Symphony. The KunstFestSpiele present the composer’s rarely heard ‘Symphony of a Thousand’ in collaboration with Hanover’s most prominent musical protagonists: eight Hanover choirs share the stage of the Kuppelsaal with the NDR Radiophilharmonie, the Orchester der HMTM Hannover and prestigious international soloists under the musical direction of Ingo Metzmacher.

In this major work Gustav Mahler combines two very different texts into a single musical world-theatre to push the traditional boundaries of the symphony. The ninth-century Latin Whitsun hymn Veni creator spiritus forms the monumental first part, a celebration of the creative power of the spirit. This is followed by fragmentary and almost operatic setting of the final scene of Goethe’s Faust. And then singers and orchestra combine for the jubilant finale of this giant masterpiece.

„Es ist Symphonie, Oratorium, Musikdrama und Mysterium der Erlösung“, so hat Gustav Mahler selbst seine Achte Symphonie beschrieben. In Zusammenarbeit mit Hannovers renommiertesten musikalischen Akteur*innen bringen die KunstFestSpiele Mahlers selten zu hörende ‚Symphonie der Tausend‘ zur Aufführung: Acht hannoversche Chöre stehen gemeinsam mit der NDR Radiophilharmonie, dem Orchester der Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover und namhaften internationalen Solist*innen unter der Leitung von Ingo Metzmacher auf der Bühne des Kuppelsaals.

Gustav Mahler fügt in seinem Hauptwerk zwei sehr verschiedene Texte zu einem musikalischen Welttheater zusammen und sprengt damit die klassische Form einer Symphonie. Der lateinische Pfingsthymnus ‚Veni creator spiritus‘ aus dem 9. Jahrhundert bildet den monumentalen ersten Teil: Eine Feier der schöpferischen Kraft des Geistes. Darauf folgt eine fragmentarische und fast opernhafte Musik mit dem Text der Bergschluchten-Szene aus Goethes ‚Faust‘. Zum Abschluss vereinen sich alle Sänger*innen und das Orchester zum jubelnden Finale dieses Meisterwerks.
