Po premierze VIII Symfonii na Mahlera czekał w hotelu list od Thomasa Manna: „Jest Pan człowiekiem, który, jak sądzę, wyraża sztukę naszych czasów w sposób najświętszy i najgłębszy”. Nie są to określenia przesadne. Równie uzasadnione jest nazwanie VIII Symfonii monumentalną. To arcydzieło godne wielkiego finału jubileuszowej – pięćdziesiątej edycji Wratislavii Cantans.
Wyobraźmy sobie Monachium na kilka lat przed wybuchem pierwszej wojny – blichtr miasta zamieszkałego przez artystów, arystokratów i inne sławy. We wrześniu na afiszu w nowoczesnej, dopiero co otwartej sali koncertowej Neue Musik-Festhalle pojawia się hasło „Symfonia tysiąca” – światowa premiera dzieła z udziałem ponad tysiąca wykonawców. Reklama zadziałała – sala wypełnia się trzema tysiącami słuchaczy – są konkurenci-kompozytorzy: Richard Strauss, Camille Saint-Saëns, a nawet młody gniewny Anton Webern, są pisarze z Thomasem Mannem na czele, reżyserzy, dyrygenci. Na estradzie istne morze wykonawców, a przed nimi z batutą staje sam Gustav Mahler. Utwór okazuje się być nie tylko gigantycznym dziełem symfonicznym, ale po części operą, kantatą, oratorium. Tak jakby Mahler pragnął stworzyć antologię wszelkich znanych mu technik kompozytorskich, a w warstwie programowej postawił sobie cel jeszcze ambitniejszy – połączyć świat boski z ludzkim. Kiedy umilkła olbrzymia orkiestra, trzy chóry i soliści, gdy wybrzmiała „ściana dźwięku”, zerwały się owacje, którym nie było końca. To musiała być jedna z ostatnich chwil splendoru „starej Europy”, która niedługo miała zmienić się nieodwracalnie. „Na progu mojej starej pracowni pochwycił mnie Spiritus Creator i potrząsał mną i prowadził mnie przez następne osiem tygodni, aż moje największe dzieło było gotowe.” Tak Mahler opisywał przejście od twórczego impasu do skomponowania w błyskawicznym tempie VIII Symfonii. Pierwszą część dzieła poświęcił obdarzającemu natchnieniem Duchowi Świętemu, aranżując tekst średniowiecznego hymnu Veni Creator Spiritus. Druga część Symfonii to ostatnia scena z Fausta Goethego, czyli pośmiertna podróż duszy bohatera do nieba, dokąd przyciąga go „wieczna kobiecość”. Dla Fausta uosobieniem „wiecznej kobiecości” była jego ukochana Małgorzata (Gretchen), dla Mahlera jego żona, Alma, której zadedykował VIII Symfonię. Mahler chce nam przekazać, że dzięki natchnieniu i miłości człowiek może wznieść się na duchowe i twórcze wyżyny. Łącząc pozornie niepasujące teksty – kościelny hymn sprzed wieków i romantyczny dramat – przekazuje własną wiarę w odkupienie grzesznej ludzkości poprzez miłość.
Przebogatą zarówno pod względem muzycznym, jak i znaczeniowym symfonię poprowadzi ceniony za interpretacje dzieł Mahlera Jacek Kaspszyk. W finale jubileuszowej Wratislavii obok Orkiestry Symfonicznej i Chóru Filharmonii Narodowej wystąpią trzy chóry Narodowego Forum Muzyki. Po raz pierwszy w historii Wratislavii Cantans publiczność i artyści będą mieli do dyspozycji salę koncertową adekwatną do ogromu Maherowskiej VIII Symfonii. After the premiere of the Eighth Symphony , a letter from Thomas Mann awaited Mahler at the hotel: "You are the man who, I believe, expresses the art of our time in the most sacred and profound way." These are not exaggerations. It is equally justified to call the Eighth Symphony monumental. It is a masterpiece worthy of the grand finale of the 50th jubilee edition of Wratislavia Cantans.
Imagine Munich a few years before the outbreak of the First World War - the glitter of a city inhabited by artists, aristocrats and other celebrities. In September, a poster in the modern, newly opened Neue Musik-Festhalle concert hall features the slogan "Symphony of a Thousand" - the world premiere of the work with the participation of over a thousand performers. The ad worked - the hall fills with three thousand listeners - there are competitor-composers: Richard Strauss, Camille Saint-Saëns, and even the angry young Anton Webern, there are writers with Thomas Mann at the forefront, directors, conductors. On the stage there is a sea of ​​performers, and Gustav Mahler himself stands in front of them with a baton. The work turns out to be not only a gigantic symphonic work, but also partly an opera, a cantata, an oratorio. As if Mahler wanted to create an anthology of all compositional techniques known to him, and in the program layer, he set himself an even more ambitious goal - to connect the divine with the human world. He devoted the first part of the work to the inspirational Holy Spirit, arranging the text of the medieval hymn Veni Creator Spiritus. The second part of the Symphony is the last scene from Goethe's Faust, i.e. the posthumous journey of the hero's soul to heaven, where he is attracted by "eternal femininity". Mahler contrasts earthly love (in the key of E-major) with heavenly love (in E-major). For Faust, the personification of "eternal femininity" was his beloved Margaret (Gretchen), for Mahler his wife, Alma, to whom he dedicated his Eighth Symphony . Mahler wants to tell us that thanks to inspiration and love, a person can rise to spiritual and creative heights. Combining seemingly incompatible lyrics - a centuries-old church anthem and a romantic drama - he conveys his own belief in the redemption of sinful humanity through love.
The symphony, rich both in terms of music and meaning, will be conducted by Jacek Kaspszyk, appreciated for his interpretations of Mahler's works. In the finale of the jubilee Wratislavia, three choirs of the National Forum of Music will perform alongside the Symphony Orchestra and the National Philharmonic Choir. For the first time in the history of Wratislavia Cantans, the audience and artists will have at their disposal a concert hall adequate to the enormity of Maher 's Eighth Symphony . Due to the necessary acoustic conditions and the colossal performance apparatus, the work - which definitely gains when listened to live - rarely hits the posters. The creation of the National Forum of Music, a space where nothing limits beauty, is the best gift for Wratislavia Cantans, who is celebrating her birthday.
