RO NOW adds lustre to your weekend! Treat yourself to musical masterpieces that are guaranteed to delight your ears. The conductor will first briefly introduce the music, illustrated with examples by the orchestra, to enhance your experience. The Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky had a deeply personal, emotional style of composing. Can you hear his joy and struggles reflected in his music?

Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 is one of his most expressive works. The composer poured his heart and soul into its four movements: freedom, melancholy, playfulness and triumph. The last movement contains a joyful reference to the Russian folk song Little Birch Tree. Tchaikovsky drew a lot of inspiration from his childhood in seemingly carefree Russia. But we all know that fate is always just around the corner, especially in classical works like these. Ultimately, however, life triumphs, as the euphoric orchestra drowns out the ominous tones. We'll kick off the evening with virtuosic orchestral fireworks by the Czech composer Smetana, the overture to his most famous opera.

De Russische componist Pjotr Iljistj Tsjaikovski componeerde op een persoonlijke, emotionele manier. Hoor je zijn vreugde en zijn worstelingen terug?

De Vierde symfonie van Tsjaikovski is een van zijn expressiefste werken. De componist goot zichzelf in de vier delen: vrijheid, melancholie, speelsheid en triomf. In het laatste deel hoor je een feestelijke verwijzing naar het Russische volkslied Hier stond een berkenboompje. Veel inspiratie kwam van Tsjaikovski’s kindertijd in een ogenschijnlijk onbezorgd Rusland. Maar we weten allemaal dat het noodlot nooit ver weg is – zeker in klassieke werken. Toch overwint het leven, als aan het einde het euforische orkest de dreigende tonen overstemt. We openen de avond met virtuoos orkestvuurwerk van de Tsjechische Smetana, zijn ouverture tot zijn bekendste opera.
