Franz von Suppè and his librettist Poly Henrion took the ancient myth of the sculptor Pygmalion, who falls in love with one of his works of art, as a basis for their enjoyable opera “The Beautiful Galathée” (1865). The statue that has come to life becomes a rather stubborn young woman. Instead of Pygmalion or the nouveau riche Mydas, she is interested in the servant Ganymede, and trouble ensues. An entertaining one-act play with fantastically beautiful music, including Galathée's elegant romance or the comedic jewel trio! The program is supplemented by a selection of Suppè's most beautiful overtures.
