Det er ikke alle, der tør at tage livtag med Dantes ”Den guddommelige komedie”, men den engelske koreograf Wayne McGregor havde modet og skabte en unik, smuk og anmelderrost ballet, vi nu kan opleve for første gang i Danmark.

Balletten The Dante Project blev uropført i 2021 i anledning af 700-året for Dante Alighieris død, og det er en episk odyssé gennem efterlivet skabt af nogle af vor tids mest banebrydende navne på den internationale kunstscene: koreografen Wayne McGregor, komponisten Thomas Adès og billedkunstneren Tacita Dean. De bringer denne middelalderlige fantasi til live gennem dansen og skaber et fascinerende univers, hvor lyd, bevægelse og lys danner kernen i en gådefuld og foranderlig konstellation. 

Den guddommelige komedie er skrevet af Dante Alighieri i 1300-tallet og regnes for et af de største værker i litteraturen. Vi kommer vidt omkring i filosofiens, religionens og poesiens verden, når Dante tager på en færd gennem helvede, skærsilden og paradis. Han ledsages først af den romerske digter Virgil, der symboliserer den menneskelige fornuft, og til sidst af sit livs inspiration Beatrice, som legemliggør kærligheden og håbet. Undervejs møder han en vrimmel af karakterer fra mytologien og historien, mens han bevæger sig fra mørke over fredfyldt ro og til sidst jublende ekstase, da han endelig møder det guddommelige.

Few have the courage to engage with Dante’s The Divine Comedy, but British choreographer Wayne McGregor not only has the artistic nerve, he has also fully succeeded in creating a unique and incredibly beautiful ballet, which we can now experience for the first time in Denmark.

The Dante Project premiered in 2021 to mark the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri’s death and is an epic odyssey through the afterlife created by some of the most pioneering names on the contemporary international art scene: Choreographer Wayne McGregor, composer Thomas Adès and visual artist Tacita Dean. A team that brings this medieval fantasy to life through dance, creating a mesmerising universe where sound, movement and light unite in enigmatically oscillating constellations.

The Divine Comedy was written by Dante Alighieri in the fourteenth century and is considered one of the greatest works of literature, reaching far and wide within the worlds of philosophy, religion and poetry. It chronicles Dante’s odyssey through Hell, Purgatory and Paradise. Initially, he is accompanied by the Roman poet Virgil, who symbolises human reason. Then by the inspiration of his life, Beatrice, who embodies love and hope. Along the way, Dante meets a pantheon of characters from mythology and history as he travels from darkness to serene calm before finally embracing jubilant ecstasy as he encounters the divine realm of the heavens.
