Rodion Shchedrin repeated more than once that “for opera, the temperature of sensations must be much higher than normal, not 36.6, but all 39.5 or even 40.0!”. He found such a feverish narration of terrible events, a mixture of detachment with confession, in Leskov's story "The Enchanted Wanderer". The story of the monastic novice, the “former koneser” (horse connoisseur) Ivan Severyanovich Flyagin is read by Leskov both as a life, and as an epic, and as an adventurous novel. Deep faith and sincerity of compassion are combined in Flyagin with cruelty, conscientiousness and diligence - with carelessness and recklessness. Shchedrin defined the genre of The Wanderer as "an opera for the concert stage", giving the opera-parable a resemblance to an oratorio. Three soloists, as in Bach's passions, both talk about themselves and play roles. Znamenny chant is heard in the music in the prologue and epilogue, and chimes in the climaxes, and shepherd tunes that the composer remembers from childhood, and stylizations of village laments that Shchedrin could hear in folklore expeditions, and gypsy romance. “Shchedrin avoids traditional opera moves,” critic Mikhail Fikhtengolts noted. – There are no extended cavatinas as such, no sweet love duets, but there is an incredibly beautiful sound continuum in which vocal and choral voices are intertwined, sounded by a thousand different orchestral timbres, from soul-tearing shepherd oboe tunes to laconic harp, gentle recorder and, as Shchedrin always has brilliant drums. Still amazed in the "Wanderer" are countless shades of silence - melting, lulling, oppressive, terrifying, thoughtful: Shchedrin belongs to those few authors who

Такую лихорадочность повествования о страшных событиях, смесь отстраненности с исповедальностью, он нашел в повести Лескова «Очарованный странник». История монастырского послушника, «бывшего конэсёра» (знатока лошадей) Ивана Северьяновича Флягина читается у Лескова и как житие, и как былина, и как авантюрный роман. Глубокая вера и искренность сострадания соединяются у Флягина с жестокостью, добросовестность и исполнительность – с беспечностью и бесшабашностью. Жанр «Странника» Щедрин определил как «оперу для концертной сцены», придав опере-притче схожесть с ораторией. Три солиста, как в пассионах Баха, и рассказывают о себе, и играют роли. В музыке слышны знаменный распев в прологе и эпилоге, и колокольные перезвоны в кульминациях, и пастушьи наигрыши, которые композитор помнит с детства, и стилизации деревенских плачей, которые Щедрин мог слышать в фольклорных экспедициях, и цыганский романс. «Щедрин избегает традиционных оперных ходов, – отмечал критик Михаил Фихтенгольц. – Здесь нет как таковых ни развернутых каватин, ни сладостных любовных дуэтов, а есть невероятной красоты звуковой континуум, в который сплетаются вокальные и хоровые голоса, подзвученные тысячью разных оркестровых тембров, от разрывающих душу пастушьих наигрышей гобоя до немногословных гуслей, нежных блокфлейт и, как всегда у Щедрина, блестящих ударных. Еще изумило в “Страннике” бесчисленное множество оттенков тишины – истаивающей, убаюкивающей, гнетущей, ужасающей, задумчивой: Щедрин принадлежит к тем немногим авторам, которые умеют конструировать музыку не только из нот, но и из пауз».
