The best-selling book by American neurologist Oliver Sacks, entitled The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat , was published in 1985. The famous theatrical adaptation directed by Peter Brook largely contributed to its recognition in France. This book describes in detail the still unexplained dysfunctions of the human brain. The English composer Michael Nyman (who notably owes his international fame with the general public to the music of Jane Campion's film, The Piano Lesson, Palme d'or at Cannes in 1993) made it into an opera in 1986, after the death of Monsieur P. He met his wife and decided to tell her story.

Mr. P. is one of the patients described by Oliver Sacks. He was a musician, opera singer and music teacher but, suffering from visual agnosia, he could see without being able to recognize a face, which could lead him to misadventures, such as taking a parking meter for one of his students and his wife for a hat. To compensate for his deficiencies, Mr. P. had built up a whole system of little melodies, which allowed him to create new landmarks in his daily life. Michael Nyman makes it the subject of his opera, a sound universe saturated with musical memories, on a beat that evokes the heartbeat of a desperate man.
After the triumph of his staging of Cyrano de Bergerac, hosted in Quimper in 2014, Dominique Pitoiset, fascinated by the story of this unusual patient, takes hold of this musical work. To work on this fascinating scientific subject with the soloists and musicians of the Opéra de Lyon orchestra, conducted by the French conductor Philippe Forget, he will draw on the latest research carried out at the Human Brain Project in Geneva.

Le best-seller du neurologue américain Oliver Sacks, intitulé L’Homme qui prenait sa femme pour un chapeau, est paru en 1985. La célèbre adaptation théâtrale réalisée par Peter Brook a largement contribué à sa reconnaissance en France. Cet ouvrage décrit par le menu les dysfonctionnements encore inexpliqués du cerveau humain. Le compositeur anglais Michael Nyman (qui doit notamment sa renommée internationale auprès du grand public à la musique du film de Jane Campion, La Leçon de piano, Palme d’or à Cannes en 1993) en a fait un opéra en 1986, après la mort de Monsieur P. Il a rencontré sa femme et a décidé de raconter son histoire.

Monsieur P. est l’un des patients décrits par Oliver Sacks. Il était musicien, chanteur d’opéra et professeur de musique mais, atteint d’agnosie visuelle, il voyait sans être capable de reconnaître un visage, ce qui pouvait le conduire à des mésaventures, comme de prendre un parcmètre pour un de ses élèves et sa femme pour un chapeau. Pour compenser ses déficiences, Monsieur P. s’était construit tout un système de petites mélodies, qui lui permettait de créer de nouveaux repères dans sa vie quotidienne. Michael Nyman en fait la matière de son opéra, un univers sonore saturé de souvenirs musicaux, sur une pulsation qui évoque le rythme cardiaque d’un homme aux abois.
Après le triomphe de sa mise en scène de Cyrano de Bergerac, accueilli à Quimper en 2014, Dominique Pitoiset, fasciné par l’histoire de ce patient peu ordinaire, s’empare de cette oeuvre musicale. Pour travailler sur ce sujet scientifique passionnant avec les solistes et musiciens de l’orchestre de l’Opéra de Lyon, dirigés par le chef français Philippe Forget, il s’appuiera sur les dernières recherches ménées au Human Brain Project de Genève.
