Mit seinem einzigen abendfüllenden Bühnenwerk «The Rake’s Progress» schuf Igor Strawinsky ein neoklassizistisches Meisterwerk. Die Oper erzählt vom Aufstieg und Fall des jungen Parvenus Tom Rakewell: Dieser lässt sich auf ein verlockendes Angebot des teuflischen Nick Shadow ein. Doch der Preis ist hoch: Denn es steht nicht nur seine Seele, sondern auch die Zuneigung seiner geliebten Anne Trulove auf dem Spiel...

Inspiration für dieses düstere Sittengemälde fand Strawinsky im Bilderzyklus von William Hogarth aus dem 18. Jahrhundert. Das 1951 am Teatro La Fenice uraufgeführte Werk zeigt Strawinskys meisterhaftes Spiel mit musikalischen Stilen und Formen. Die Anklänge reichen dabei von Monteverdi, Händel, Mozart über Verdi bis hin zur zeitgenössischen Jazzmusik.

Für die Inszenierung konnte die Schweizer Opernsängerin und Regisseurin Maria Riccarda Wesseling gewonnen werden. Die musikalische Leitung hat Yannis Pouspourikas inne.

With his only full-length stage work, “The Rake's Progress,” Igor Stravinsky created a neoclassical masterpiece. The opera tells of the rise and fall of the young parvenus Tom Rakewell: He accepts a tempting offer from the devilish Nick Shadow. But the price is high: not only his soul is at stake, but also the affection of his beloved Anne Trulove...

Stravinsky found inspiration for this dark moral painting in William Hogarth's picture cycle from the 18th century. The work, which premiered at the Teatro La Fenice in 1951, shows Stravinsky's masterful play with musical styles and forms. The echoes range from Monteverdi, Handel, Mozart and Verdi to contemporary jazz music.

The Swiss opera singer and director Maria Riccarda Wesseling was hired for the production. Yannis Pouspourikas is the musical director.
