In »Das Rheingold«, the eve of »Der Ring des Nibelungen«, Richard Wagner has the entire personality of Nordic mythology appear: gods, giants, dwarves as well as dragons and the playful Rhinemaidens. They all fight over the magical ring, which Alberich, the Nibelung dwarf, forged from the stolen Rhine gold became. Only by renouncing love could he create this work, just as the Rhinemaidens had proclaimed:

"Only he who renounces the power of love,
only he who chases away the lust of love,
only he achieves the magic
of forcing gold to mature." When the father of the gods, Wotan, stole the ring with the help of the cunning Loge, and the giants Fasolt and Fafner demanded the ring as wages for their work on the Valhalla castle of the gods, the fateful, timeless story of greed, selfishness and exploitation took its course.
