The rhythm of the dance: Concert Various

Music composed to be danced has an internal rhythmic dynamic that contains within itself the liberating will of a body. It is known how the rhythm of a dance, whether it is unbridled or melancholy, lively or calm, always generates an irresistible desire to abandon oneself by discharging the passions and purifying the spirit. For these reasons, when we composed the musical program for this concert, we immediately thought of performing some of the most beautiful French music dedicated to ballet. Music that, in these first months of reopening of musical life in theaters, allowed us to relive together a festive and liberating moment.

The seven episodes of Gounod's Faust open the concert by recalling ancient dances inspired by emblematic female figures such as Cleopatra or Phryne. Also to a woman, Countess Elisabeth Greffulhe, is dedicated the second piece by Fauré, the famous Pavane with its enchanting melody. Instead, we are transported to Hispanic lands with the three passages taken from the ballet of Massenet's opera Le Cid from which the persuasive Andalusian dance stands out. Two more women will be the protagonists of the only vocal piece of the concert, a lulling barcarola, taken from the opera Lakmé by Delibes, sung on the flowery banks of a distant Indian stream.

A concert dedicated to dance could not fail to present the most famous dance of the symphonic repertoire: the second movement of Symphonie fantastique which evokes the gay tumult of a dance party. The concert concludes with one of the most beautiful pages of Baroque music composed by Rameau for the opera Les Boréades. A slow music which, in the opera, accompanying the entry into the scene of the muses, the seasons, the hours and the arts, almost seems to invite us to finally find a state of recollection and peace

Le musiche composte per essere danzate vivono di una dinamica ritmica interna che racchiude in sé la volontà liberatrice di un corpo. È noto come il ritmo di una danza, che sia sfrenato o malinconico, vivace o pacato, generi sempre un irresistibile desiderio d’abbandonarvisi scaricando le passioni e purificando lo spirito. Per queste ragioni, quando componemmo il programma musicale di questo concerto, pensammo subito di eseguire alcune delle più belle musiche francesi dedicate al balletto. Musiche che, in questi primi mesi di riapertura della vita musicale nei teatri, ci permettessero di rivivere insieme un momento festoso e liberatorio.

I sette episodi del balletto del Faust di Gounod aprono il concerto rievocando antiche danze ispirate a figure di donne emblematiche come Cleopatra o Frine. Sempre ad una donna, la contessa Elisabeth Greffulhe, è dedicato il secondo brano di Fauré, la celebre Pavane dalla suasiva melodia incantatrice. Veniamo invece trasportati nelle terre ispaniche con i tre brani tratti dal balletto dell’opera Le Cid di Massenet dai quali spicca la suadente danza andalusa. Ancora due donne saranno protagoniste dell’unico brano vocale del concerto, una cullante barcarola, tratta dall’opera Lakmé di Delibes, cantata sulle sponde fiorite di un lontano ruscello indiano.

Un concerto dedicato alla danza non poteva non presentare il ballo più celebre del repertorio sinfonico: il secondo movimento della Symphonie fantastique di Berlioz che evoca, appunto, il gaio tumulto di una festa danzante. Conclude il concerto una delle pagine più belle della musica barocca composta da Rameau per l’opera Les Boréades. Una musica lenta che, nell’opera, accompagnando l’ingresso in scena delle muse, delle stagioni, delle ore e delle arti, sembra quasi invitarci a ritrovare finalmente uno stato di raccoglimento e di pace.
