“Gut-wrenching brilliance.” —The Guardian
The Rite of Spring is a ballet and orchestral concert work by Russian composer Igor Stravinsky reported to have caused a riot when it first premiered in Paris in 1913. It is realized in this two-part programme by a first-time collaboration between the Pina Bausch Foundation (Germany), École des Sables (Senegal), the international centre for traditional and contemporary African dances, and Sadler’s Wells (UK).
Pina Bausch’s seminal 1975 reimagining caused a stir in the dance world with its striking depiction of a “chosen one.” Now, Bausch’s choreography is danced by a newly assembled company of 36 dancers from African countries. Workshop auditions were held in Burkina Faso, Senegal, and the Ivory Coast, bringing together an expansive dance community. It will be restaged by past and present dancers of Pina Bausch’s Tanztheater Wuppertal.
For common ground[s], Germaine Acogny, “the mother of contemporary African dance” and founder of École des Sables, unites with Malou Airaudo, a former member of Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch who has performed central roles in many of Bausch’s pieces. Both are choreographers, professors, and mothers, and the duo’s poetic and tender piece examines their shared histories and emotional experiences.
