Conductor Tugan Sokhiev on music in the opera "The Tale of Tsar Saltan" by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (Bolshoi Theater)

Among the musical tales of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, The Tale of Tsar Saltan (1900) is one of the brightest. The ups and downs experienced by its heroes lead all participants in the action to a joyful end, the villains are forgiven, but most importantly, no one dies. The only exception is the "magician" -kite: he appears for one minute in the second act and immediately dies from the arrow of Tsarevich Guidon - in full accordance with the plot of the tale of Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin.

The excellent libretto by Vladimir Belsky and the score by Rimsky-Korsakov, filled with musical "miracles", written on the basis of this tale, were appreciated already at the first performance. The premiere was played by the Moscow Private Opera Association in 1900. This performance became legendary thanks to the scenery of Mikhail Vrubel and the “mysterious face of the unforgettable princess” - the wife of the artist Nadezhda Zabela-Vrubel (quote from the opinion of the famous critic and musicologist Yevgeny Braudo).
