A bit of history ...

"Khanuma" is a real theatrical bestseller. It is difficult to name at least one theater of musical comedy in Russia, in the repertoire of which this name would not take pride of place. And this is not surprising: the juicy oriental flavor, the ever-topical topic of matchmaking, the impeccable sense of humor and the music of the great master are a win-win recipe.

However, the performance did not appear immediately in the form we know. Its history began back in 1882, when Avksentiy Tsagareli composed a play of the same name for the benefit performance of his wife, the Georgian actress Nato Gabunia. It was she who invited the ensemble of folk instruments to the premiere, to the accompaniment of which she brilliantly performed the Georgian dance "lekuri" and created a real sensation. All Georgia started talking about "Khanum".

Avksentiy Antonovich Tsagareli (1857-1902) - Georgian playwright, director and actor, actor.

He studied at the theological seminary. From early childhood he showed love for Georgian theater.

In 1878, Tsagareli's first everyday play, "Other Times", appeared, warmly received by the public and the press. Poetic talent and humor manifested itself even more vividly in the plays that followed: "Khanuma" (1882), "Maiko", "Tsimbireli" (1886), "Matchmaker", "Baikush", "Georgian mother", "What will you come with, with that you will leave ”(1902) and others.

He translated about 20 Russian plays for the Georgian theater. Also, Tsagareli wrote interesting memoirs about the Georgian theater (1899).

Due to material insecurity, the writer was forced to serve as a station chief on the Transcaucasian railway all his life.

Knowing closely the Georgian-Armenian life, Tsagareli was able to very vividly embody on the stage the real, typical characters of people from the Tiflis common people. The work of the writer was highly appreciated by A. N. Ostrovsky.

During its more than 130-year history, the play has withstood many performances not only in Georgia, but also in Russia. The extraordinary popularity of Tsagareli's vaudeville led to the fact that, with the development of cinema in Georgia, it was one of the first to be filmed - in 1924. This 70-minute silent tape almost completely repeated the plot of the original work, with the only difference that instead of the heroes, the narrator read the text in Georgian. In addition, the play served as an inspiration for the creation of the opera "Keto and Kote", written in 1919 by the composer Viktor Dolidze, and in 1948 the famous film of the same name with music by Archil Kereselidze was created. It should be noted that the tape was filmed in two versions: in Georgian and in Russian. In addition, more songs and folk dances were added to the film adaptation, from which the picture only benefited.

But “Khanuma” became a real hit in 1972, when famous comedians Boris Ratser and Vladimir Konstantinov wrote their own version of the Russian text. They significantly updated the text of the 19th century play and supplemented it with poems by Grigory Orbeliani. The atmosphere of the old Georgian city was recreated on stage with the help of the scenery of the artist Iosif Sumbatashvili. And the music with national motives, written by the Georgian composer Gia Kancheli, added a special charm to the performance. The play, created in the same year by Georgy Tovstonogov, became one of the most popular productions of the Bolshoi Drama Theater of Leningrad and has withstood more than 300 performances. The luminaries of the BDT - Lyudmila Makarova, Efim Kopelyan, Vladislav Strzhelchik, Nikolai Trofimov, Vadim Medvedev and others - swam in this unpretentious material, as in the warm waters of the Kura, washing the banks of Tiflis.

The stunning success of the performance contributed to the fact that 6 years later its TV version was filmed with the participation of the same legendary artists. This is how the two-part comedy "Khanuma" appeared, which still enjoys tremendous audience love ...

This is how, thanks to the fame of Tsagareli's vaudeville, numerous performances and films based on his motives, the name of the main character, Khanuma, has long become a synonym for the word "matchmaker" for many.
