A young governess receives three directives from her absent new employer before she arrives at Bly House: never write to him about the children, never ask about the history of the house, and never abandon her charges.

Her initial apprehension turns into joy after meeting the “innocents,” Miles and his sister Flora.

But happiness quickly descends into horror amidst an unnerving shroud of secrecy and her discovery that two prior tenants of the estate still reside—in their own way.
