This is a short promo of our adaptation of The Yellow Wallpaper - Full production being developed through 2022 for performances in 2023.

Based on the short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. A woman and her physician husband go to stay in a countryside manor to help with her mental health due to post natal depression. She is isolated for the summer to a room with yellow wallpaper with strict bed rest and a ban on all activities including reading, writing and painting. We follow her time there and discover her true feelings on this type of treatment.

The Yellow Wallpaper Howard,D

This haunting modern opera is directed by the festival's own Amy Lane and written on the basis of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's groundbreaking feminist short novel 'The Yellow Wallpaper' from 1892.

 

The titular yellow wallpaper adorns the wall of the room where a young woman undergoes an involuntary rest cure after postpartum depression. The story of the forcibly isolated woman's obsession with the disturbing color and patterns of the wallpaper contains an urgent message about societal structures that oppress women, which is still highly relevant today.

 

The acclaimed mezzo-soprano Clare Presland is an attractive focal point in the role of the woman who is secretly trying to break free from her captivity. Together with a pianist, a cellist and a dancer, she releases Dani Howard's melancholic and drivingly beautiful composition with a libretto written by Joseph Spence. Howard's critically acclaimed works have, among other things, been compared to Ravel. 'The Yellow Wallpaper' is one of four newly written operas composed by women which premieres at this year's festival.

Denne besættende, moderne opera er instrueret af festivalens egen Amy Lane og skrevet på baggrund af Charlotte Perkins Gilmans banebrydende feministiske kortroman ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ fra 1892.

 

Det titulære gule tapet pryder væggen i det værelse, hvor en ung kvinde efter en fødselsdepression gennemlever en ufrivillig hvilekur. Historien om den tvangsisolerede kvindes besættelse af tapetets urovækkende farve og mønstre rummer et påtrængende budskab om kvindeundertrykkende samfundsstrukturer, som stadig er højaktuelt i dag.

 

Den anerkendte mezzosopran Clare Presland er et dragende fikspunkt i rollen som kvinden, der i al hemmelighed forsøger at skrive sig fri af sit fangenskab. Sammen med en pianist, en cellist og en danser forløser hun Dani Howards melankolske og drivende smukke komposition med libretto skrevet af Joseph Spence. Howards anmelderroste værker er blandt andet blevet sammenlignet med Ravel. ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ er den ene af fire nyskrevne operaer komponeret af kvinder, som har premiere på dette års festival.
