Handel's 1750 dramatic oratorio, Theodora, is a rarely performed work of the English canon. Retelling the doomed love story of the Christian Theodora and her converted Roman lover Didymus, the work wasn't initially appreciated by English audiences. Today, it is recognised as a masterpiece of the canon. Additionally, it is Handel's only Christian-subject dramatic oratorio, and one of the few works of the period to end with the deaths of the two heroes.
Theodora will represent Concordia Ensemble's third Handel oratorio, and second Lenten period oratorio, following the very successful 2022 Season Semele. Join Concordia Ensemble at the stunning Pitt Street Uniting Church, Sydney, for a performance of this oratorio in abridgement with piano accompaniment.
