Haas' intensive music-theatrical view of the themes of love and death is complemented in this evening by the perspective of another, no less radical composer: Claudio Monteverdi revolutionized the musical language over 400 years ago. He was also preoccupied with the themes of love and death in works that still touch deeply today.  In the version of the Bavarian State Opera, Thomas is  interwoven with Monteverdi's madrigal  Lamento d'Arianna : a symbolization of mourning and the pain of parting in the face of death.

Anna-Sophie Mahler's artistic interest since studying directing at the Hanns Eisler University of Music in   Berlin has been experimental and documentary forms in drama and music theater. Since 2004 she has worked as both a theater and opera director, among others at the Theater Bremen, the Thalia Theater Hamburg, the Münchner Kammerspiele, the Bavarian State Opera, the Deutsche Oper Berlin or the State Opera and the Schauspiel Stuttgart. With her staging of  Mittelreich based  on the novel by Josef Bierbichler for the Münchner Kammerspiele, Anna-Sophie Mahler received an invitation to the Theatertreffen in Berlin in 2016. In 2017 she was presented as an artist with two works at the Biennale Teatro in Venice. Most recently she staged at the Thalia Theater, among others Midday hour, based  on the novel by Dörte Hansen. For this she already worked with the artist and set designer Katrin Connan, the costume designer Pascale Martin and the film and video artist Georg Lendorff. With this team, Anna-Sophie Mahler will work for the Bavarian State Opera, where she worked in 2014/15when director of  Francesca da Rimini  was a guest, also direct the chamber opera  Thomas  by Georg Friedrich Haas. New to the team is the conductor Alexandre Bloch, who is  making his debut at the Bavarian State Opera at the same time as  Thomas . Born in France, he took over the position of music director of the Orchester National de Lille (ONL) at the beginning of the 2016/17 season and has been the first guest conductor of the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra since September 2015.
