In zijn kleurrijke muziek verknoopt Thomas Adès op virtuoze wijze klanken uit heden en verleden. In 2011 maakte de Engelsman een overtuigend debuut als dirigent, gevolgd door samenwerkingen in 2016 en 2019. Nu keert hij terug voor de Nederlandse première van zijn Pianoconcert, een ware dollemansrit vol onverwachte wendingen, geschreven met de onwaarschijnlijke virtuositeit van Kirill Gerstein in gedachten. De pianist soleert ook in een bijzondere versie van Liszts Totentanz, uitgebreid met materiaal van Liszt zelf.  

Thomas Adès Adès opent met het barokke Caryatids van Veronika Krausas en sluit af met de Symfonie in drie delen uit 1945, waarin de naar Amerika uitgeweken Stravinsky diverse ideeën voor mislukte filmmuziekprojecten verwerkte. De turbulente symfonie is een op televisie- en documentairebeelden geïnspireerde reflectie op de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Marcherende soldaten, mensen die hun velden onbegaanbaar maken voor de vijand, de opmars van de geallieerden… ‘Ieder deel van de symfonie houdt voor mij verband met een specifieke cinematografische impressie van de oorlog.’

In his colorful music, Thomas Adès virtuosoly intertwines sounds from the past and present. In 2011, the Englishman made a convincing debut as a conductor, followed by collaborations in 2016 and 2019. Now he returns for the Dutch premiere of his Piano Concerto , a true madcap ride full of unexpected twists and turns, written with the unlikely virtuosity of Kirill Gerstein in mind. The pianist also performs as a soloist in a special version of Liszt's Totentanz , expanded with material by Liszt himself.  

Thomas Adès Adès opens with the baroque Caryatids by Veronika Krausas and closes with the Symphony in three movements from 1945, in which Stravinsky, who had fled to America, incorporated various ideas for unsuccessful film music projects. The turbulent symphony is a reflection on the Second World War, inspired by television and documentary images. Marching soldiers, people making their fields impassable to the enemy, the advance of the Allies… 'For me, each part of the symphony is related to a specific cinematographic impression of the war.'
