Live from the famed Opéra-Comique in Paris, discover Titon et l’Aurore by Mondonville. This 1753 opera-ballet follows the tumultuous and seemingly unbreakable liaison between l’Aurore (“Dawn”), a goddess running from her immortal fate, and shepherd Titon. Basil Twist’s masterful staging and a typically impeccable performance by Les Arts Florissants, under the direction of William Christie, make this production a delight for the eyes and ears. The title roles are interpreted by star tenor Reinoud Van Mechelen and acclaimed soprano Gwendoline Blondeel, with Julie Roset as l’Amour, Emmanuelle de Negri as Palès, as well as Marc Mauillon and Renato Dolcini as Éole (Aeolus) and Prométhée (Prometheus).

The spirit of pastoral care allowed eighteenth-century music to develop its evocative power by painting nature in all its facets. Behind the deities and shepherds who roam it sometimes passes a philosopher, dreaming of the condition of man...

This opera-ballet appeared in January 1753, in the midst of the "Querelle des Bouffons" triggered by supporters of Italian art. Opera was then a political affair: protected by the Pompadour, Mondonville federated the French camp by the elegance of its songs, the expressiveness of its orchestra, the variety of its effects. Especially since it was served by Jélyotte and Mlle Fel, Rameau's favorite performers.

For us, the Dawn and her shepherd open 2021 with a feast of the senses. Promoter of Mondonville, William Christie returns to the Opéra Comique with this major score. Trained in puppetry in France, Basil Twist deploys visual wonders. Statues, deities and elements come alive to the sound of Arts Florissants.
