If you ask someone to name an opera that contains murder or suicide, there is a good chance that they will list half of the opera literature. However, if we ask in which of them both occur - and all the characters die at the end of the play - then the circle narrows down to Tosca.
However, Puccini's opera is exciting not only because no one survives the end. The action takes place over the course of a single day: in the course of 24 hours, three are dead - including Rome's police captain, who abuses his power to blackmail those around him and thus becomes the master of life and death. But Scarpia's sexual desire pushes him beyond a certain point, he loses his self-control and becomes the same victim as those whom he has judged so far.
In addition, Tosca is a psycho-crime. A thriller. To be precise: a musical erotic thriller. What Hitchcock was on the movie screen at the time is Puccini on the opera stage. The composer has created a finely crafted and passionate crime drama about mechanisms such as the presence of power in the church, politics and sexuality.
Few operas intertwine political arbitrariness with personal passion so closely and openly as in Puccini's gripping play about love, honor, betrayal, power and jealousy.

Ha megkérnénk valakit, hogy mondjon egy operát, amiben van gyilkosság vagy öngyilkosság, akkor jó eséllyel a fél operairodalmat felsorolja. Ha azonban azt kérdezzük, melyikben fordul elő mindkettő – és hal meg a darab végére az összes szereplő – akkor nagyjából a Toscára szűkül a kör.
Puccini operája azonban nemcsak attól izgalmas, hogy a végét senki nem éli túl. A cselekmény egyetlen nap leforgása alatt történik: 24 óra elmúlása alatt három halott – köztük Róma rendőrkapitánya, aki hatalmával visszaélve zsarolja a környezetét s ezzel élet-halál ura. Ám Scarpiát szexuális vágya túllöki egy bizonyos ponton, elveszíti önuralmát és ugyanolyan áldozattá válik, mint akik felett eddig ő ítélkezett.
Mindemellett a Tosca egy pszicho-krimi. Egy thriller. Egészen pontosan: zenés erotikus thriller. Ami a filmvásznon annakidején Hitchcock volt, az az operaszínpadon Puccini. A zeneszerző egy finoman kidolgozott és szenvedéllyel teli krimit alkotott olyan mechanizmusokról, mint a hatalom jelenléte az egyházban, a politika és a szexualitás.
Csak kevés operában szövődik össze ennyire szorosan és nyíltan a politikai önkény a személyes szenvedéllyel, mint Puccini megragadó darabjában szerelemről, becsületről, árulásról, hatalomról és féltékenységről.
