Rome 1800. Baron Scarpia, in charge of setting up a secret police force, offers the singer Floria Tosca a deal: freeing her lover, the painter Mario Cavaradossi, against a night of love. For his return to the Opéra national de Montpellier, the Spanish director Rafael Villalobos has chosen to evoke, on the sidelines of the historical framework, a hot topical subject: the fear of God used as a tool of political domination, pressure moral and religious that the Vatican exercised on the characters of Tosca. How would they keep their faith intact when everything around them seems to be tainted with corruption and despotism? How will Floria Tosca react when the border between unscrupulous power and religious dogma becomes too porous? Faced with the relentless pursuit of the supporters of freedom, Cavaradossi and Tosca will only have the tragic outcome to escape this universe of terror. A production under the baton of Michael Schønwandt, a fine connoisseur of Puccini's work whose music has tremendously paved the way for the most burning passions and has some of the most beautiful tunes in the lyrical repertoire for you.
