An opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini with a libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, based on the eponymous play by Victorien Sardou. It premiered in Rome, at the Teatro Constanzi, on January 14, 1900. At the time, the political atmosphere in Italy was tense, with a lot of revolutionary agitation of a socialist and anarchist character. Tosca symbolizes a confrontation between decadence and progress, at the turn of the century, giving prominence to ordinary people, from different social strata, instead of focusing on royalty or demigods that traditional operas commonly resorted to. The action takes place a century before its debut, in the summer of 1800, when, after the fall of the Roman Republic, Queen Maria Carolina, wife of Ferdinand IV, King of Naples, settled in Rome and entrusted Baron Scarpia to create a Secret Police to ensure the restoration of the monarchy. Under the musical direction of conductor José Ferreira Lobo, the Orquestra e Choir da Ópera na Academia e na Cidade will share the stage with soprano Cristiana Oliveira (Floria Tosca), tenor Pedro Rodrigues (Mário Cavaradossi) and baritone Nuno Pereira (Vitellio Scarpia). ), among others. The staging belongs to Carlos Avillez, one of the most celebrated, awarded and outstanding Portuguese directors, director of the Cascais Experimental Theater.
