This revival performance series of Puccini’s operatic thrill Tosca is notable for the stars it brings together on the stage. First, it marks Jonas Kaufmann’s return to the Opernhaus Zürich. Kaufmann not only began his international career here, but Zurich was the site of many significant milestones in his professional career. He’s brought numerous characters to life here, including Cavaradossi in Robert Carsen’s production of Tosca. Now he returns to the city on the Limmat for three performances. Appearing with him is a singer just as thrilling: American soprano Sondra Radvanonsky, who will bow at Kaufmann’s side as Floria Tosca. Radvanonsky is a singer at home in all of the great opera houses of the world, the Metropolitan Opera in New York first among them. And none other than Welsh baritone Bryn Terfel, who’s won the hearts of Zurich audiences many times over as the Dutchman, Falstaff, and Sweeney Todd, plays the sinister Baron Scarpia. Azerbaijani tenor Yusif Eyvazov, who alternates with Kaufmann as Cavaradossi, rounds out this dazzling cast. And with a cast of this caliber, there’s no one better to conduct than General Music Director Gianandrea Noseda, who will lead the Philharmonia Zürich.

Diese Aufführungsserie von Puccinis Opern- Thriller Tosca steht ganz im Zeichen der Stars, die sie auf der Bühne vereint. In ihr darf die Rückkehr von Jonas Kaufmann ans Opernhaus Zürich gefeiert werden. Kaufmanns Weltkarriere hat in Zürich begonnen und entscheidende Schubkraft entwickelt, hier war er in vielen Rollen zu erleben. 2009 sang er den Cavaradossi in der Premiere der Tosca-Inszenierung von Robert Carsen, in die er nun für drei Vorstellungen zurückkehrt. Nicht minder hochkarätig ist die Titelrolle besetzt: Die amerikanische Sopranistin Sondra Radvanovsky, die an allen grossen Opernhäusern der Welt, vor allem aber an der New Yorker Metropolitan Opera zu Hause ist, singt die Floria Tosca an Kaufmanns Seite. Und kein Geringerer als der walisische Bariton Bryn Terfel, der die Herzen des Zürcher Publikums als Holländer, Falstaff und Sweeney Todd erobert hat, gibt den finsteren Baron Scarpia. Der aserbaidschanische Tenor Yusif Eyvazov, der alternierend mit Kaufmann als Cavaradossi auftritt, komplettiert die spektakuläre Besetzung. Genau der richtige Dirigent für so viel Sängerprominenz ist unser Generalmusikdirektor Gianandrea Noseda am Pult der Philharmonia Zürich.
